I think you need to cancel 30 days before the end of your contract, or contact your new provider and they will do it for you1

If you didn't have a landline you couldn't get the internet through the phone line.Anyway, this is how you transfer. You don't say anything to your current ISP. You sign up with a new ISP. The new ISP tells your current ISP that you have signed up with them. Your current ISP sends you a letter saying that you have decided to leave and if you have changed your mind contact them. If you are happy to keep going with the swap you do nothing. The new ISP will tell you the changeover day. On the changeover day your internet access will stop at some point. You connect the new ISP's equipment/change the log in details in your router and wait for the internet access to re appear. Your new ISP will send you instructions. When the internet access reappers the swap has finished. It takes about two weeks to swap ISPs. Sign up to the new one about a week and half before your current deal finishes to prevent swapping before the minimum term is up which could result in early termination fees.0

Just a reminder if you switch to a Virgin Media contract then switching works in a different way as it uses its own network and you have to cancel your existing provider as Virgin Media wont do this for you.0
