Buying lottery tickets is not officially considered an essential purchase, I would think.I buy them online from the NL website every week, have done for at least 2 years. That way you can use credit or debit card to pay: I use my debit card. I buy one line each of Lotto and Euro every week and consider the sum as "lost" money. Someday, Rodney..... smiley: )

And the relevance of this is what, exactly? 🤷‍♂️

It's completely irrelevant, and if the intention was to sow doubt that buying Lottery Tickets at shops is allowed, it's completely incorrect too.

You can buy whatever you want from Tesco, or any shop, regardless of whether it is 'essential' or not.

You shouldn't make a trip to the supermarket just for the purpose of buying one.

I buy my lottery tickets every Saturday using my Barclaycard together with other few bits - it has always been treated as a purchase not cash transaction.

Also for whoever wants to know - purchasing of National Lottery tickets is still allowed by credit card and is not part of the ban.
Which is odd, given that when the lottery started you could not buy a ticket with a credit card. Done for the very reason to stop people spending money they did not have.

OK, this is how I should have written it:   You shouldn't make a trip to the supermarket just for the purpose of buying one.

Just been to Tesco to get my shopping and for some reason the checkout till was not doing the lottery, so I went to the customer service desk to get my lottery ticket.
I got my tickets and they were not accepting cash so I had to pay with my credit card.
Will that be considered a cash transaction and incur any charges?
I would look at the receipt but I never got one as the assistant had said I can't take cash in case it is infected so I said I don't want the receipt in case you have infected it.
    Nationwide Select credit card.

Did you not take the lottery ticket for the same reason?

I hate to be a pedant, but the National Lottery website doesn't accept credit cards. Debit cards only.

how could this be policed if i was stopped after exiting a supermarket with just a lottery ticket vodka and gin and asked to explain the answer is simple. Officer i came to buy a lottery ticket (to support charities) hand sanitiser eggs, flour, yeast,  but they were out of stock so i could only buy a lottery ticket and vodka and gin as make shift hand sanitisers

Who has said they are going to the shops just to buy a lottery ticket?

Nobody, so why even bring it up? Are you one of the Facebook "dont go outside or you will die of Covid-19 instantly" brigade?
