The theory with butter is that putting butter on the cats paws encourages them to lick it off. In doing so, they transfer more of their scent to the paws and therefore track it around when wandering enabling them to find their way home.

As others have suggested OP, I'd put a paper collar on the cat and see if anything comes of it. Alternatively, ring your local vet/rescue and see if they would scan for a microchip, if you catch it.
