Samsung TV Fault after 3 Years

Options
Hi all,
wondering if anyone can help me with this. I purchased a Samsung Curved 55” TV back in April 2017 in Curry’s PCWorld and has recently developed a fault where there is a black shadow going through the middle of the screen and in the bottom right corner it looks like the screen is going white. This tv isn’t used a great deal as I work during the day only in evenings and not even for that long. I paid £825 at the time and haven’t got the money to go and buy a new one. I’ve been reading a lot about the consumer rights act but not sure if I can use it or what to do next. Can anyone advise? I’ll try anything to save me buying a new tv!

Thanks
Rich

After three years you've next to no chance of getting anything out of Currys unless you bought an extended warranty.

I'm afraid it's a case of putting up with it or seeing if you can buy a second-hand replacement.  The good news is that prices have dropped in recent years so you wouldn't need to spend anywhere near £800 for a similar-sized TV.  John Lewis do 55" TVs for as little as £330 and they come with a decent warranty period.  You could probably pick up a second-hand one on eBay for less than £150.
  • The Consumer Rights Act 2015 doesn't apply to Currys then? Goods must be 'fit for purpose' and 'last a reasonable length of time'. I'd say that a TV should definitely last longer than three years!

Of course it does, but OP would need to get an independent inspector to verify an inherent fault, which is highly unlikely for a TV that has worked faultlessly for three years.   If OP got that verdict, then Currys would be obliged to act.  They could choose to repair (probably not cost effective), replace or refund,  with any refund tempered to account for three years' use.

    What would you recommend?
  • I have had the same issue bought a curved QLED TV and afer 2.5 years the screen has a green line across it, I complained to Samsung who just said tough luck over 2 years get it repaired yourself which is a cost of £650. I quoted the relevant act and they just ignored it. What have I learned is Samsung just dont care, and you should always buy on credit card, as you would be protected under section 75 potentially. I used the Klarna interest free option which is infuriating and even more infuriating i bought it from Samsung direct on their upgrade scheme and did not upgrade early as would of had to return the TV :( wish I had
  • TV was £2200 as well over 4 years

Im currently in dispute with Currys over a faulty TV as well. Currys told me the Consumer Rights Act doesnt exist so...
  • I have just had a similar conversation with Samsung. I bought a 55" curve screen and within 3 years 25% of the screen has gone black. They said they would book a repair but would not be willing to anything else as it was more than 12 months old. I escalated it to a higher level and they offered me a 15% voucher to buy a replacement from them but I won't be buying another Samsung tv that's for sure. I also asked if they could provide statistics to how many of these Tv's were faulty within a 3 year period and yet again another standard customer service stonewall was applied direct from the Samsung poor service handbook .
So how many people have had this problem is the question and in reality are these tv's not fit for purpose in which case the consumer rights act dictates that we should be offered a refund or replacement. I will be sending a link of this page with the comments to Samsung UK customer service just to see if we can get some clarity on this as I am feeling very ripped off right now as I am sure you all are as well.

Probably better starting your own thread.

You’re not completely right about the CRA though. It states the retailer must off a repair, replacement or refund (and refund can be reduced to take into account the use you’ve had off the TV. However, the onus is on you to demonstrate that the TV has an inherent fault and you’ll need an independent inspection and report to do this. Without that, they’re doing nothing wrong.
