For of you above the reason I said veterans was I was trying to get Martin Lewis attention to pensions .

Martin Lewis sold this website years ago and hasn't posted on it since.

Hmrc are quick enough to call it income when its Being taxed.  but all of a sudden it's not income just because I don't go out to work for it

It is income.  It is not earned income.

I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. Pensions are effectively deferred wages, so you did work for your pension, just not at the moment. I doubt Martin Lewis reads all these posts though, and even if he did, I think the time to debate the reasons behind the 50% test is long past.

There would seem to be no need to have a Government coronavirus scheme for pensions (whether veterans or otherwise) as this income is not impacted by coronavirus.
  • I have the utmost respect for anyone who puts their life on the line in the armed forces, it's not something I could do.
What does upset a lot of small self employed people, is where a serviceman leaves the forces, at still a youngish age, gets a nice pension, sets up as a self employed whatever and can easily undercut the competition because they don't need to make the same margins.  When I was involved with the MOD back in the 80/90's that was quite a common theme, don't know if it still exists.
To all servicemen and ladies, we are very grateful for your service, but when there are plenty of people who work their backsides off, pay their taxes, and get nothing but a cheap loan, please don't moan that your pension isn't classed as self employed income.  There are many people who will benefit greatly from this, and many who won't.
  • On radio 5 last Monday the Martin Lewis slot at 12.30 actually had this question and Martin replied that it was a pension so, no there would be no grant availability.

That would be the whopping armed forces pension, yes?
How do I get this 'whopping' armed forces pension? Mine is nowhere near whopping. Bigger than the state pension maybe but not that big.
