Hiya everyone 👋
Im looking for a bit of advice,  i have just received  my monthly credit report which has a new utility bill added onto it from british gas. The issue i have is that the bill is not mine! Its from a previous address that i moved from 7 and a half years ago. I also was never on any of the utility bills there, (mums old house). Ive tried calling them but the advisor just kept asking for my account number and wasnt understand that i dont have one. I have also emailed them but is there anything else i can do? Its really bothering me as i have been keeping such a close eye on my credit report as my partner and I are hoping to buy our forever home next year 😣 I just dont want this to mess anything up.
Thanks in advance

If there is a bill, then there is an account number.

If you lived at the property, you may be responsible for the bill, as you presumably used the energy there.

Does the bill relate to a time period when you were living in the house as an adult, or are you saying it is a new bill relating to a period after you no longer lived there?
Presumable it is a negative reference relating to late or non-payment, or is it something else?

Hiya its actually a new account that started on the 19th March 2020 so I havent lived there in 7 and a half years. There is no bill as of yet it just seems the account has been opened in my name. My mother also moved out around 3 years ago and wasnt with british gas.

Sorry i feel i worded that wrong its an account thats appeared not a bill.

You are not still on the electoral roll at that address are you?
I would report it to BG and the credit agency, in writing, as a mistake and do make sure you are off the electoral roll if that is the problem...

Thanks so much for your reply, no im not on the electoral roll there 😣 if reported to BG via email now. Its so annoying as i do keep a very close eye on my credit report and work hard to make sure it stays good. Thanks again for your help

Flag it with the credit agency as well, don't depend on BG to sort it out.

    Even better.

If there is a BG account, there will be a BG account number.

Though BG should be able to find it for you based on your name (as the account holder) and the supply address.

Do let us know when you find out on what basis the supplier thought it appropriate to set up a credit account in your name and report that credit account to a credit reference agency.

Hope you didn't leave any personal details behind when you left 7.5 years ago that someone has now fraudulently used. Hear lots of these type of identity scams going on, but usually they just raid your bins for your ID info (but then they probably would not know where you lived 7.5 years ago).

Thanks mwt, i was worried sick for a bit there. Ive spoke to british gas again who were next to useless, however i have  now emailed them and waiting to hear back. Ive also reported it to the credit agency so i think im ok on that front. The old house was also part of a local housing authority so i contacted them and they have emailed me confirmation of when I stopped living there just incase i need to take it any further. Fingers crossed 🤞
