Milk over backseats

Options
Hi,

I recently bought a carton of milk from Morrisons.  By the time I got home the milk had spilled over the back seats.  When inspecting the carton, I noticed that the foil seal was peeled from the back.  As this happened at the start of this pandemic, I had to get my car valeted at home to avoid contact with multiple persons.  Morrisons are trying to spin the situation that I did it intentionally.  They are stating that this issue would have been picked up on well before leaving the store.  I advised that the carton was placed straight into a basket upright, then was self scanned so a member of staff has not came into contact with it.  They are advising that this should have been checked before purchasing.  However, if you look through the top of the lid, the seal would seem intact.

Should Morrisons accept liability for the cleaning costs?

    No, of course not.

Even if it was damaged in store which it probably was it's up to you to ensure it is stored and transported correctly in the car.

We had something similar with Spar where it spilled out in our fridge. We just took it back and swapped it over and then cleaned the fridge and floor ourselves.

No question of blaming someone else.

I'd like to make a separate point: if I were Morrisons, I would be highly suspicious that someone had interfered with the milk.

That is why cars have boots to put things in... Not leave it on the back seat.

I have known of stores paying out for similar things, but Morrison's aren't known to have the best CS , and scammers have been known to try this type of trick.

How can Morrisons possibly claim that if some time previously someone else had removed the plastic top and then peeled the foil and replaced the top anyone would notice before leaving the store ?
    What utter rubbish !
This does not help the OP however
  • No, Morrisons need not accept liability.  Transportation is your responsibility.  No use crying over it.
I do accept the liability for transport. But, the product was faulty? You don’t just pay for the contents of the jug. They are refusing to accept any responsibility, after the first colleague accepting there was a fault. Having worked in customer service, if the is an admission then you need to follow it through. Especially when the company won’t even be paying out of pocket. They have small claims insurance for issues up to around £250. Right now, I am more arguing for the principle. I bought a faulty product, and there was no attempt to even offer a refund or replacement for the product. That is extremely poor.

That was another worry of mine. If it’s happened to one, I’d suspect it has happened to others.

Foil seals not always being sealed is not uncommon ... I've encountered it at least twice this year, and probably at the same ratio every year since I can remember buying plastic cartons of milk. (Not from Morrisons as we've never had one nearby). So if Morrisons are denying that this could happen they are being disingenuous.
