    This thread would have been better placed in the banking section as its not to do with CV.

    Does seem odd for them to close the account if you still owe them money. 

    Fwiw you can open an account with pretty much any bank online in a matter of minutes. If you've got a payment incoming in due course, I would open one immediately and have the payment details changed.

    If the UC payment is due to be received in the next few days then it will be too late to change bank details now.

    Closing the account doesn't write off the debt.  They will expect full payment immediately.

    If the a/c is overdrawn most of the time (even if authorised) and the usage pattern changes significantly i.e there has been very little activity, especially cash in, this can trigger closure of the account procedure.
