Does seem odd for them to close the account if you still owe them money.
Fwiw you can open an account with pretty much any bank online in a matter of minutes. If you've got a payment incoming in due course, I would open one immediately and have the payment details changed.0 -

If the a/c is overdrawn most of the time (even if authorised) and the usage pattern changes significantly i.e there has been very little activity, especially cash in, this can trigger closure of the account procedure.0
