Citizen Card Scam

  • I agree with you.  I was very surprised when I renewed in 2008 the passport that had expired in 1989.  All I needed to submit was the expired passport, countersigned photos and the application form.  All done by post - couldn't be simpler.  I had imagined that renewing a passport that had originally been issued in 1979 would be more difficult.

But what do banks etc check with a passport?  Mine is (or was) a British Islands - Isle of Man passport.  I've used it as an ID for bank accounts etc, but what do they check?  It wasn't issued by the UK government, and I suppose most bank employees have never seen one.  (It basically looks like a UK/EU passport unless you read what it says on the cover and look inside where the layout is a bit different).  Is the passport checked against some UK/Channel Islands/Isle of Man etc database?

'Cos if it's not checked, a valid current passport is as likely (or more likely) to have been lost or stolen as an expired one.

Interestingly, it's just struck me that I don't have any currently valid photo ID.  My passport expired nearly three years ago and my photocard driving licence has an expiry date on it in June 2020 - although so far as I know it's been extended because of Covid, but on the face of it, it's expired.

(And I haven't not renewed my passport because I'm a skinflint - I'm not sure if I want a UK one or a Manx one...  Does anyone know if I can have two?)
  • An expired passport can be evidence of identification.  (If you think about it, it's quite obvious really as you don't suddenly cease to be who you are at some arbitrary date.)  Mind you I'm not saying that one that is 20 years old is going to work.  Have you asked Revolut?

I renewed a passport that had been expired for nearly 20 years - who's to say I was that person?  (The JP who counter-signed my renewal photograph certainly didn't know me from when I had the original passport - or even when it had expired).  Can you prove that you "now" is the same person as the expired passport?
You know I might actually ask Revolut about that.   I've still got the expired passport as it is.   And while I would obviously look a lot younger,  if I provided a copy of my current bus pass then it would clearly show it's still me.
Worth a punt, all things considered.

Hope the doctor does not charge too much for the proof.
    £30 @ ours....
    Even solicitors are not cheap.

Now if only we had a National ID card :)
Doctor won’t do it.  Post office in town won’t do it and Santander, where I’m an existing customer, also won’t do it so that’s me done with the idea.

It’s a pain I’ve lost a tenner over it but so be it.

Thanks for all of the suggestions and ideas everyone :)
The best way is to go to someone you know personally, the list of professions is quite long, surely you must know someone in one of those professions?

    No, I don't.
It's really a moot point anyway now because I did ask them about using an expired passport as verification and they said no.    CitizenCard, rather surprisingly, got back to me and seem to have indicated that I can have a refund for the card application fee so i'm pretty happy with that and I can finally, and fully, put this to bed now.
