Bought user car now having issues
Hello,
So I bought a used fiesta 2010 reg diesel in march..this was an upgrade from an even older Peugeot 107 (07).
Anyway, the garage I bought it from sold it with an MOT and oil change bits. I took out RAC cover for stuff that could go wrong with it that were not wear and tear. The first week I bought it it drove fine but I got a yellow light come on. It said on the dash board 'engine malfunction, service now'. (Its the exclamation mark warning light with circle round it). So I stopped and called RAC. The guy ran his ipad thing and said he cannot find any faults with it but best to get it in for a full service and filter change so I did that. At that time I spoke to where I bought it from as I wasnt sure if this fell within the warranty? (I think I've got 3 months warranty with them also) and they said no but gave me £60 for the filter part as a gesture of will.
Fast forward to now, it has since come on a handful of times again. Each time I stop and turn the engine off, turn it back on again and it has usually gone. But a few times it has felt like it has lost power and/or stalled. The last 2 journeys it has come on twice and had to stop. I am very anxious driver and this is making me feel so bad about driving it. I work in the NHS 35 mins away from my home so I need a car to get me there safely.
I've messaged the garage that did the full service for.me, someone I've known for years but due to Covid he cannot look at it until 18th May. Should I be going back to the garage I bought it from and say I'm not happy? I would happily give it back if I were able to and buy something a bit newer. I am not a car person at all so I have no clue what to do. I appreciate its about to turn 10 years old but I never had this (or any other) issue with my old Peugeot.
Many thanks for reading.

An intermittent engine management light with no fault codes stored can be a very tricky thing to diagnose. It may be worth looking into a cheap fault-code reader so that you can read any transient codes that come up while the light is on - was it on when the RAC man came?
One possibility is that the previous owner's driving patterns weren't giving enough time and heat for DPF regeneration - but if you're doing decent-length runs, that should resolve itself.0 -
Thank you for your reply. Yes I read that on some forums when I first encountered the problem that it can be hard to find the fault. No the light wasnt on when the RAC man turned up and everything was showing as normal. He then followed me half the way home and again it didnt come on!
I've just found that fault code reader for £19.99 on euro car parts. If I order it, is it as easy as I plug it in to the place that the RAC man hooked up his ipad to?
If it still drove okay I wouldnt mind but it's the fact that it loses power and stalls which is not very safe. It also has only really happened at speeds of 30 MPH and less, when I've been going 40 plus it hasnt come on but that might be coincidence.0 -
How many miles has it done? The fault code reader does what the name implies, and tells you the code for the fault, you then look it up in a booklet. They can be helpful- you can post on here or a fiesta forum and get advice on what to do, but they won't actually fix anything, and sometimes the fault code can be caused by a related problem- hence posting the information on a forum. It could be as simple as a loose boost pipe, but I'd expect an experienced RAC man to check that..The loss of power is the engine going into limp mode because it thinks there is a problem and it is trying not to break something.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Okay so I bought the fault code reader...
I stalled at the traffic lights near my house and the light came on. Except I didnt stall if that.makes sense it did it itself. Anyway, light came on I pulled over to hook up the new reader and it went off. Carried on 2 minutes to my home and it came on as I went on the drive. Scanned the machine and it picked up no codes.
What do I do now? Wait until the 18th for the garage to look at it near me or contact the garage I bought it from originally.
Many thanks for your help.0 -
If it was a petrol engine, I'd say crankshaft sensor, they rarely give a code. Diesels have them too, no idea if they give a code or not though. It will be worse in warmer weather if it is the crank sensor. If it were mine, I'd swap the crank sensor out- worth a punt to save messing about with garages.See when the garage you bought it from can look at it, if they can't take it to your own next Monday.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Please can anyone help me out:( Idont think i was using this properly as I just looked at the instruction manual and when I plug it in the message at the top (which I think it's the brand of the ODB) comes up and I cannot get it to say CAN like the instruction manual does.
I have messaged the originally dealer but am terrified to drive it anywhere. Today I stalled 3 times, once changing gears from 2nd to 3rd or the other way round I cant remmeber I just turned the car off and on quickly and pulled over. This isnt the original symptom that it had but I cannot understand how now after 13 years of driving I am starting to stall cars. Its definitely the car.

Here you go- I can't be bothered watching all of it, but he at least gets it going. His is an Aldi version, so it says Auto XS OBDII, where yours says SW OBDII (SW= Streetwize)

Ah amazing thanks I got it to work in the end but no codes as you cannot plug it in whilst engine on but then when I turn it off the warning light goes. It just stalled on my husband when he took it out for a spin. Bloody cars.0

I would try asking here

As Peugeot can require their won software to read faults. I know my old 206 & 207 CC's did.Life in the slow lane0
