Hi there, im looking for some help please as this will be our first time with sky having had cable for the past 10 years and apologise now for possibly daft questions. They are coming on Tuesday and I dont know what wiring will be needed for them to install sky+ and the broadband can anyone please explain what wireing will be needed to install sky+ and a normal sky box and broadband? will they just use the cable wireing for broadband? and how easy will it be to set up as our line is cable and wont be bt for another 10 days so presuming i will need to set things up and with that in mind will i still be able to access the pc with cable modem to get help as cable will require 1 months notice and im hoping to swap over in 2 weeks once bt line is in
Next is the email where do i go or who should i use is there a bt email i could use rather than just use hotmail or yahoo without having to pay a lot per month? And how long will i still have access to our blueyonder.co.uk account will that close as soon as our account closes?
Again i apologise for all the questions but i would rather have the knowledge now before i possibly loose my internet access and have no help available to get back online.
Thanks in advance;)

Mail-wise google is good - and big!
I now would avoid isp mail, as every time you leave you loose contacts with friends, associates, businesses etc. This also avoids mail client problems and can be viewed anywhere in the world, which may leave you open to attackGOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time.0 -
Ive got gmail account which i dont use as it seems to get hit with tons of spam and drug adverts  which was without putting the email address into any sites so dont really want to use gmail - unless its changed, i do like the yahoo email but i think ive come across somewhere that dont accept emails form hotmail, yahoo and the likes or again has that changed too or would that have been an icolated site?
Thanks for your help;)The more i save the more i can spend:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0 -

OK...
Sky...
The engineer will install a twin cable from the dish to the Sky+ box location. You need to have a phone socket or extension cable to connect the Sky+ to as per the terms of your contract.
Broadband...
The Broadband comes through the BT line, not cable, so you're going to be without broadband until it's activated which is typically 5 days after the installation of a new BT line.
E-mail...
Yes, BT have their own but IMO you'd be better off with a Hotmail, Yahoo or Gmail account as it also means you don't need to change e-mail addresses from them when you change ISP. How long your blueyonder e-mail lasts is anyones guess. What you'll need to do in your e-mail client though, is to set the SMTP server for the Blueyonder account to BT's once it's connected if you intend still sending mail with your Blueyonder e-mail address.0 -
they wont be able to use the cable wiring at all, and i think since you dont have a bt line yet they wont be able to install the broadband as it wont work on a cable telephone line0
-
Thank you, they wont be able to install the broadband as you say till 5 days after activation of the bt line hence i was wondering as to how the set up would go? will they leave the modem/router and cableing with me and its a simple as plugging in and thats it or will they send someone out to get it up and running once my 5 days are up? also if the sky broadband is coming via the bt line will the cable broadband still work coming via cable rather that the phone line? as we have been informed that the phone part of things will be taken care of by bt as were taking the same number but i presume we still have to give virgin notice on the broadband and tv, hence im kind of hoping to have the virgin broadband as back up if i get stuck connecting the sky broadband, if that makes senceThe more i save the more i can spend:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0

Your Sky router will be delivered separately i.e. nothing to do with the Sky dish installation. Wait until your Sky BB is working OK and then cancel your cable BB which is totally independent. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Once you have your BT line and the broadband is activated all you have to do is plug in the router and off you go.
Sky e-mail is Googlemail with a Sky front end.
I have both and prefer the standard Gmail service.
Blatant plug: All you ever wanted to know about Sky broadband etc is here:

PS very wise to keep the cable broadband going until the ADSL is up and running, may cost you a bit more during the overlap but would be well worth it.That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Thanks, have i understood it correct then that i will have virgin b.b whilst setting up the bt/sky that would be good i wont be stuck for online advice as i have yet to give virgin notice which i will be doing on Tuesday once sky is installed.
Another question about the router does that just plug into my pc or will i need to buy anything to get up and running? ie a wireless card or usb? or is that just in addition home pcs connecting to the main line? The more i save the more i can spend:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0 -
Basically, you plug a network cable from the router to the PC, turn it all on and that's the lot. The Router will do the connectivity and the PC will get the info it needs from the router. Are you planning on using Wifi?0
-
No not at the moment i just read somewhere wireless router and wondered/worried if i had to buy anything to connect to my pc hence asking. Thank you.
I have now found 2 telephone extentions one routed under the carpet coming out at the pc and the other upstairs should be enough to route it around the door to where the second sky box will be. I just need to find out now about bt and there wireing, do you think they will just use virgins inside the house or will they lay there own? As we need it wired the was it is with 3 sockets but with the old bt i think there is only 2 boxes that i can findThe more i save the more i can spend:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0
