They make money by holding up the RRP and making wholesalers pay top dollar for kit. They also take royalties for game titles sold with their consoles. They restrict supply to help the PR story about theirs being the product everyone wants.
They even launched a TV advert campaign at a time when they knew the shops were unable to get their stock, then put out a press release saying they might have to pull the adverts because they were unable to keep up with demand.
This is NOT a case of stupid punters - this is very clever marketing on the part of one of the games console manufacturers.
Nintendo DO NOT have a history of playing pricing games and making price cuts to generate demand, they make a profit on every Wii sold, unlike the Xbox and PS3. The Gamecube and DS all stayed at the same price for years after launch, The gamecube stayed at the same price for almost 2 years after launch, the DS only got reduced after 2 years when the DS Lite came out, and then it was by a tenner. As you say they take royalties from the games, thats where the most money is generated, and the more they have out there the better they are. Does it hype it up, yes it does, but does it help Nintendo, no, they'd rather have boxes in stores to sell.but why stop amazon fr and amazon de sending them to the uk in november then ? back in this thread (i think) a consumer was told by amazon directly that nintendo had told them not to sell any consoles to people with uk addresses and they stopped the trade .
yet they had plentiful supplies in europe where consoles are less popular .
sorry your argument doesnt stand up , they may not make any more money on EACH console but they do on the volume that are sold through the extra hype , and their retailers also make by selling over priced bundles .because they know people are so desperate they will buy anything if they are short .
Sorry Again Not following this, Nintendo have stated they have no asked Amazon to stop selling them from Fr and DE to the UK, it's all hearsay. Neither company will risk offending the other and say it publically for fear of upsetting the other.
The only thing that may come into bearing is the fact they don't have moulded UK plugs and there may be a CE issue to be considered. It may be that CE rules won't permit companies to sell them cross border without replacing the power unit. This does not apply to customers, they buy at risk, but will affect the big reputable companies who do have to consider legal implications.
Again I'll point out Nintendo make the same amount if the retailer sells it for £1.79, £179 or £1790, all the extra profit or loss is trousered by the retailer. In terms of Hype Nintendo have generated the hype, they would not really want to see the hype fizz out by them not having the mchines to sell.0 -
I didn't realise Wii Play with the Wiimote was mega hard to find: they had loads of them in HMV Reading yesterday, £35, even with people snapping up the Wii + 3 games deal. Now I've got the Wii on order maybe I should have got one too...oh well a week or two playing Wii Sports won't hurt0

but the basic console package only comes with one Wiimote....hence why people were snapping up WiiPlay...because it not only has the extra games, but more importantly the extra remote so you can play multiplayer games.0 -
I dont understand why anyone would want to buy a Wii from this board for a number of reasons
1) They can buy it for RRP from a retail outlet thereby having a guarantee, reciept, and the posibility of returning for a refund if found to be faulty.
2) They can be picked up for less the RRP on E-bay.
3) Put the Purchase on a debit/Credit card and all the associated benefit that brings.
4)Not have to drive or rely on a total stranger for delivery of their chids Xmas Present.
If you have bought too many Wiis then simply return to the retailer and when they put it back on the shelf you will be helping out by making it available for Resale. So please no more offers for sale on this Board, it makes one suspect that you are one of the carpet baggers that have been caught out!!!!0 -
Has anyone received their wii play they ordered from gamestation last wednesday - mine is still showing as processing and i am hoping for this to be delivered by christmas0

I have phoned them today, as mine is still showing as processing, they told that it will be posted tomorrow, and that most of the time the order never changes from 'processing' even after it has arrived. She did tell me it would be here for xmas.0 -

Their problem is most retailers will not accept returns unless faulty or under 7 days if bought online. There may be some exceptions to this.
Thats why they try to flog them on here and save some Ebay fees, now they know its turned into a lead balloon.0 -

From what i have seen most people on this board offering Wii's have been because they were so hard to get hold of a number of friends and family were recruited to get them and they ended up with 1 that they didn't need. They were then offered on here out of people's kindness so that MSEers could get one at cost in time for Christmas. Don't judge everyone by your standards, there are some nice people out there.0
