Hi
Can anyone recommend a good and reasonably priced site for downloading MP3 files? I don't particularly want to get tied into a monthly payment one, but also want to keep costs down, obviously. Has anyone used Napster? They are doing a 7 day free trial at the moment which might be worth thinking about.

To reply in a legal manner:
iTunes has a massive selection but not the cheapest.
Amazon will soon be offering an MP3 shop too.0 -
www.wippit.com offer a subscription service of unlimited downloads (not the best selection) and you can keep the music if you cancel unlike a lot of other subscription services where the music is deactivated once you cancel your subscription, i.e. you're only really renting the music."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I've been using Napster for some time it's fine. You have a choice of contract: either a monthly subs for a download-however-much-you-like option or a pay-by-track option. I use the latter. It's 79p a track.
One thing to bear in mind: Neither uses actual MP3's. Napster uses WMA and iTunes uses .AAC (MP4) I think and both are DRM protected... :cool:Blessed are the geeks, for they shall inherit the Internet.0 -
You might like to try we7.com. Not exactly the best selection of tracks there, but you get totally free mp3 downloads with a 5 or 10 second advert or jingle at the beginning. I seem to remember that after a while (a month, maybe?) you can return to the site and download the same file without any advertising. And, if I remember correctly, the files really are .mp3 (as opposed to .mp4, .wma, etc.)0

I love napster. Definitely try the free trial. It's about £10-11 monthly and you can listen to any album you want (Or download but only for playing through napster - if you have slow internet) and make playlists, listen to radio (not proper radio - just selections of genres e.g. rock) with no limits at all. If you want to download for an mp3 player or CD you pay for that but it's saved me loads as I can try before I buy any albums! Although as someone mentioned it's in wma format so it only works for Windows (not mac)I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right0

Re,- WE7. Use Audacity, it's free from here, (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/), to edit out the adverts. Also useful for recording streaming audio from the net, I use it to record from BBC7.0

Sounds dodgy to be honest (if you can get it for free). Beware of loads of the russian websites that make you pay. A friend of mine just released a CD that has appeared on loads of these mp3 websites and he hasn't authorised it and certainly isn't receiving a penny from any sales (if there are any).0 -
There's nothing dodgy about WE7. The adverts are from big well known companies. I don't think the idea has a future though because there's a limited choice, you can fast forward past ads or edit them out and then get them without ads a month later.0

WE7 has been featured on the BBC, it's completely legitimate and was founded by Peter Gabriel, the same musician that founded OD2, the distribution network that most music stores actually use. It's simply a different income generating strategy, it's no more dodgy than when Prince gave away his last album for free with a newspaper.
