I would type in the make and model of your car to get a quote.
  • It takes a few days for the DVLA to update their records.  It will probably take longer during the present circumstances.

On comparison sites, just use the "I haven't bought the car yet" option or use the old registration.

But if I put in old number plate and get quotes , I obviously need to purchase one now so my car has insurance but the number plate will be incorrect won’t it ? And I don’t want to get into trouble with police etc and my insurance to be invalid

Simplest answer is to renew with your existing insurer. You will find that comparative quotes will be high because you've left it so late.

Transferred a V5c last week to a new owner online and V5c arrived in less than a week.  If you can do things online they seem to working fairly efficiently but aren't dealing with paper forms and it sounds as if the phone is a non starter too.

If it was me I would phone within 2 minutes of them opening in the morning and if that doesn't work you probably have no chance.

What did the insurer say when you phoned them and explained the situation...?

Renewal will 99% of the time be more expensive regardless of time. I would get a quote on a comparison website for the same make and model and then ring the company using the reference and give them the number plate. Happened to me when I bought a new car

I didn’t stay with existing insurance as they always go up , so I put in details on comparison site as I always do (with old number plate on) , Tesco came out top , I rang them explained about number plate , they said no problem just ring us when you get new form from dvla - we don’t charge for number plate alterations so all is good and I went with them . I just have to keep on old plate till confirmation comes through from dvla - thanks to everyone for all their help
