Daughter flew to california last August with AER LINGUS .Her return flight in 2 weeks has just been cancelled.
Do they have a legal obligation to get her back to her original destination(Glasgow)or does she pay for a new flight(probs.BA and v.expensive)and try and get refund at later date?

No obligation at all
She needs to look at her own arrangements , double checking that each country she possibly lands in on transit will allow her in . There's also a risk of parts of the flights are cancelled

More to the point, why did she not make immediate plans to return home when the UK government advised to do so?2

Because it was advise and and not compulsory.bradders1983 said:More to the point, why did she not make immediate plans to return home when the UK government advised to do so?
Her decision should have taken into c consideration her insurance cover (would it still be valid?) and if she could claim for this (now) cancelled flight.
BTW
IMHO Aer Lingus have a legal obligation to get her back, and shouldoffer her a re-routing on another airline. However if they refuse then she will will have to claim the cost back on her credit card (or insurance if it is still valid).

Whatever the reasons, doesn't change the advice they are seeking, it's a purely personal question that has no relevance to the airlines duty.blindman said:

If it was a return, even if Aer Lingus refuse to reroute her, she claim claim back the cost of the new flights from them, as long as she doesn't claim a refund for the cancelled flight.blindman said:BTW

Yes it was advice. But airline routes were closing all the time, I have very little sympathy for people who claim to be "stranded" abroad when they did nothing to remedy it.blindman said:

Someone started a thread on here yesterday about running up a huge phone bill because he had been "stranded in Malta for 7 weeks and the airport was shut". 2 minutes of Googling turned up the airport isnt shut and Air Malta are still running a daily flight to Heathrow 🙄🙄0 -
She wasn't claiming she was stranded.bradders1983 said:

Second part.
If AerLingus refuse to refund then she should claim back on the credit card0 -
She should contact Aer Lingus and advise she is still in LA and wants to return home. I don't think they are operating any transatlantic routes at present, the planes seem to be on a permanent route to Beijing and back but they may make arrangements with American and BA who they have a joint venture with, the route may be via another airport in the US as flights are few and far between due to the US ban on all passengers from the EU and UK which was imposed a long time ago. Don't book alternative flights until checking with Aer Lingus but as others have said, the FCO advised all UK citizens to return to the UK weeks ago0
