Thanks for that.  Have you got the model of the Brother?
    Model is HL-1110
Looking at the one you have a clicky to in another post it looks as though mine is an older model of that.

I think I'l stick with B&W then and just keep the inkjet for any colour stuff.

Found a Brother printer on Amazon (clicky).
Anyone any thoughts on this one?
Looks like a more recent version of the one my mum has. I would expect it to be perfectly adequate for light to moderate usage.

I'm getting slightly wary of the original one I posted as it's a make I don't know and it's only original cartridges.
That one seems to be out of stock, along with most of the others. I have a Brother, several years old now, and 2 features I appreciate are network capability, so that you can print from any device in the house, and duplex (double sided) printing. At the time it cost £60 and Amazon even sent me 2 by mistake. (I did return one...) In the case of Brothers, look for a D in the model number for Duplex and an N or W for network. Of course, those features may not be of interest to you and they do come at a cost.
BTW, the CiberDirect cartridges at around £12 are excellent.

There seems to be a Kyocera in stock at Printerland for £65.

Don't forget that, even if colour laserjet printers are generally more expensive than black&white ones, nobody will force you to print in colour if you don't need to.
I have a HP MPF M200 series (I purchased it with a big cashback offer from HP) and it's still got the original colour toners after 3 years.

Likewise with a HP M254DW bought a year ago and still on the original 'starter' cartridges. Moving to a laser is a no brainer, no longer sat there waiting for the inkjet to do a head cleaning cycle every time you print. Bit expensive but very reliable.

I changed from inkjet to b/w laser. Main reason was because every time I seemed to need it the ink was dry and needing replacing. Is it cheaper? Not really but more reliable. Got a Samsung. Prints well although my non tech self was never able to print wirelessly. From memory cost about £170.
  • When you buy a new printer (including laser printers), the toner supplied with the printer is never a full yield toner. So I'd always suggest buying another toner with the printer.

If you are an infrequent printer, you won't get the dried out heads with a laser printer. I find the cost with inkjets is not necessarily how much you print, but how often between you print. If it's only a few times a year, it works out to be very costly as you wind up replacing ink cartridges with dried out heads each time you come to print.

The downside with a laser printer, is that after around 50,000 sheets (depending on make and model) you will need to replace the drum.

I'm pretty sure the software in the toner cartridges and drums stops them working after they've printed their stated capacity, forcing you to buy a new one rather than shaking the toner cartridge to get a few more prints out of it or using the drum until all the printer produces is white sheets of paper.

My last HP inkjet printer lasted about 5 years. In that time I only used 2 toners. The paper feed gave in, which was a common problem with the particular model I had bought. When I needed a printer again, I bought a Brother HL-L23700DN - primarily because I like being able to put at least half a ream of paper in the drawer and know that my wife isn't likely to have to re-stock it if she wants to print something, and secondly because it has a network port (ethernet) which means any device connected to the network can print directly to the printer, without messing around with WiFi.

The other good news is that Brother provide a proprietary driver for most Linux installations. The bad news about that, is that it is 32-bit so requires some additional libraries to be installed alongside it on a 64-bit system.
A dream is not reality, but who's to say which is which?
  • Can you print in RasterMode?
What Displaymode is the Detail in; might it be in technical Displaymode?
Can you print when the Detail is in Wireframe mode?

  • If you only use your inkjet once in a long while you will probably find that the ink is dried up and it may be more trouble than it is worth.
You can get a colour laser for less than £200 e.g.
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kyocera-ECOSYS-P5021cdn-Colour-sheets/dp/B082FS6J9F/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=color&qid=1596626036&refinements=p_36%3A16000-40000&rnid=428432031&s=computers&sr=1-2
we ran a Brother for quite a few years and it was much better than the colour inkjets we had been struggling with as our usage was not often enough.
