I'm with United Utilities and recently got sent one of each of these things:

Even if you can't get some of these things for free - it might be worth you buying some of them if you think they'd help
Regarding the meter, it’s something I’m considering for when I find a property!Officially a homeowner 🥳🥳

I've lived in my flat for 2 years and it's my first experience of having a water metre and I can absolutely recommend them. I am keen to reduce my water usage and having a metre has been a re-education and made me very aware. I have now got my water bill down to £97 a year. If you want to reduce your bill and your usage I would recommend it. If you are the kind of person who likes to put the hose on the garden every week and wash your car at home and doesn't care, then don't. It requires dedication - lots of it. Personally I think everyone should have them so we learn a new respect for water. We've already had a warning about water usage here in the NW because of the hot spring we've had so we're going to be in a for a year of hosepipe bans at this rate.

I'm a bit of a sceptic and do think what will be the case long term.
The Water Companies will have a bottom line bill to get income for. This comes from a mix of RV and Water Meter. As the income moves from RV to meter then the metered rates will have to disproportionately rise until such time (in theory) all income has to come from meters and therefore mete rates will be the same as RV's are now..
PS swopped to meter last year !
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Water companies are a bit dishonest about charging. They could estimate far more accurately than they do, where the next door neighbour has a meter.0

A few tips, when running taps to get hot water don't turn it on fully, turn it on just enough for the boiler to kick in. A strip wash in a bathroom sink uses less water than a shower. Don't fill large pans to cook food, fill just to cover by half an inch, and use a lid or use a smaller pan. If you have just made a drink and are cooking food that requires water in a pan using the excess water in the kettle could save on electricity.

You can also not use the hot water at all. Running it long enough to make it hot is a terrible waste of water. I boil my water on the hob for washing up so I only boil what I actually need. It means that between April and November I can switch my boiler off completely. Money saved.
