Virginmedia - second connection?

Hi all,
i have virginmedia broadband. There are two “connections” into the house - one upstairs and one downstairs. We used to have virginmedia TV upstairs but now it’s only downstairs - where the broadband router is situated.

I’d like an Ethernet internet connection upstairs. As I say, there’s a connection in and I’m wondering if I can get a broadband connection up there without calling virgin and paying for one of their routers. Do you think the connection up there is cut off as I’m no longer paying for a second tv box?

If I can potentially set it up myself, could you please let me know what equipment (router?) I need which will take the cable in that virginmedia use?

thanks for any help!

I would have thought you could get a broadband connection upstairs either by
    1. wifi or
    2. power plugs or
    3. running an ethernet cable.

If the VM tv cable and VM broadband cable are both come into the house downstairs then the VM cables upstairs are probable dead.  Nothing to stop you attaching a ethernet cable to  a spare connection on the existing router and routing it up stairs but connect it first and try it before you go to the trouble of routing it. As an alternative  you could investigate using a Powerline adapter but you don't have to buy a VM supplied one. https://www.virginmedia.com/help/virgin-media-what-is-a-powerline-booster
Are you sure its not a TV service you want upstairs?

I can get WiFi internet from the downstairs router, but I was hoping for a wired broadband connection upstairs. It seems if I’m to make use of the virginmedia connection upstairs (from when I had an additional tv box) I’ll have to contact virgin and pay monthly fees etc

The chances are the upstairs VM connection will be TV only, your post suggests it isn’t another TV outlet you want but Ethernet , getting VM to re-establish the upstairs outlet won’t provide that, TBH, the solution has already been provided, thats an Ethernet ‘cable’ from the router or power line type adapters that utilises the mains wiring to provide an Ethernet connection to where you want it.

Thanks. Yes the virginmedia wired booster sounds interesting. Does anyone have any experience with how effective these are?  I presume virginmedia charge for this equipment? Any idea how much?

That sounds like some sort of wired ‘WiFi booster’ , if that’s what you want ( better WiFi in a particular room that currently has a poor WiFi signal) , there are plenty of these available, not normally wired into anything ( apart from the plug into the  mains ) and once purchased it’s yours , not part of a monthly rental arrangement, I’ve no idea if the VM version is a one off payment or an install charge and ongoing monthly rental, I guess you need to check out their website or give them a call if that’s what you are after
