Furloughed

I work in a school as a ta and the head requested I be furloughed but the local council have this isn’t possible. I have a zero hours contract. I’ve worked for them for nearly 3 years (1year fixed term contract). I’ve read everything and so had the head and can’t understand why I don’t fit the requirements.! This what they’ve said
With regards to your enquiry no local Authority can furlough employees as they are paid via public funding from governorment, this means they cannot claim back any salaries paid under furlough (the 80% of salary). there may be some employees under local Governorment that are funded by an external provider this is why it will say some, as they possible will apply for the scheme. Also schools are still operational the are open on reduced duties, as the school is open and not closed the staff cannot be furloughed. With regards to casual staff there are no available hours due to the reduced duties for casual/supply staff to cover until the school is fully operational
any help / advice would be appreciated

The government has pretty much left the public sector out, yes some can claim but most can't which does not help people like you. Why they did not open it up to the public sector workers when they changed the scheme from being a job retention scheme to it current scheme, which is basically a keep Boris popular scheme now.

Yes Universal Credit providing you don't have savings/capital of more than £16,000 and then you're excluded. Use a benefits calculator to check entitlement.

Be aware that a claim for UC will end any tax credits you may already be claiming.

Strange use of the word unfortunately there, I’d have thought with no money coming in having over £16,000 in the bank would be quite a fortunate position to be in compared to a lot of people?

Furlough is optional to any employer, be they private, public sectors or an agency. the rainy day you  have been saving for has arrived, the government will expect you to spend your own money in the bank providing for yourself before they start helping out with Universal Credit.

Private sector have customers who pay them for things and the private company then uses that to pay their staff. If they are unable to trade as normal, they may not be able to pay their staffs wages.

The public sector do not trade commercially for profit like the private sector does. Their wage bills are already taxpayer funded.
