Ordering furniture between exchange and completion?

Hello!

Hoping for some advice. Finally managed to exchange on my purchase yesterday, and due to complete on the 22nd May. I'm currently living with my family until the purchase goes through, so have no furniture for the new place.

Most of the furniture I'm ordering has a good 2 week lead time, so would like to get most ordered for delivery a few days after completion. I'm still a little cautious about getting things ordered, but I'm thinking as we have exchanged then the vendor would be liable for costs etc if for any reason we didn't complete. Just wanting reassurance before I press the buy button really!

Thanks for your help.

The vendor wouldn't be liable for the costs of  cancelling your furniture orders.

I paid a deposit for a full house renovation between exchange and completion. If they don't complete, the vendors are liable for the costs. Sounds stupid doesn't it?

Unless you've very carefully measured up, & know where everything will go, & that it will look right, don't order stuff until your in.
Just get the essentials; bed, couple of plain chairs etc.

Even with a lead time, there is a risk that you haven't been able to move in, or there's an issue, & that they can't be flexible with delivery dates.

But the seller would be liable for a lot more

I would definitely have a "what if" backup plan.  What if....
...the Government stops people moving house
    ...the new house burns down
    ...something else
At least get it in writing that the furniture company will be flexible on delivery dates.

Leaving aside whether or not the vendors would actually be liable for costs you're incurring (unless you put something specific in your contract), there's also the possibility that completion doesn't happen on time for reasons which aren't the vendors' fault.

No timings should be relied upon during this outbreak. How lucky do you feel?
  • Thanks for all the comments/replies, will most likely explore organising things once I have the keys!

We didn't order a sofa until completion, too many things can go wrong, used dining chairs for a short while, no shame in that.
