Training is allowed so yes, its a perfectly valid loophole.

Refusing probably wouldnt do you any favours at all tbh.

    Hmm.

Can I do volunteer work/training if I am furloughed?

Yes, so long as the volunteer work/training does not provide services to or generate revenue for, or your Employer.

If you complete online training courses while you are furloughed, you must be paid at least the full National Living Wage (NLW)/National Minimum Wage (NMW) for the time spent training, even if this is more than the 80% of your wage that will be subsidised.

Making you go IN for training seems very suspect, it must be said.

    Guidance says:

    "If your employee undertakes training
Furloughed employees can engage in training, as long as in undertaking the training the employee does not provide services to, or generate revenue for, or on behalf of their organisation or a linked or associated organisation. Furloughed employees should be encouraged to undertake training.

Where training is undertaken by furloughed employees, at the request of their employer, they are entitled to be paid at least their appropriate national minimum wage for this time. In most cases, the furlough payment of 80% of an employee’s regular wage, up to the value of £2,500, will provide sufficient monies to cover these training hours. However, where the time spent training attracts a minimum wage entitlement in excess of the furlough payment, employers will need to pay the additional wages (see National Minimum Wage Section for more details)."

So yes, you can undertake training. And yes, in the unlikely event that you do a lot of training, the company must make your wages up to at least minimum wage if the CJRS payment doesn't exceed that already.

Everything posted above is my personal opinion. It may be right, it may be wrong, but it is mine.

He might not be able to legally but you will be the one paying the price. If you rock the boat he can make your life difficult and decide you no longer have a job. What worse that will happen to him ? his claim is denied and he just pretends oh I did not know sorry.  The only thing you can sensible do is do the job and record the evidence you have done and report him.
