As for that Screwfix plunger/vacuum, loads of people gave it terrible reviews (no matter how cheap it costs),
    Really?
I've just has a look at the link and the reviews are in the main, very high.
88% of people recommend it and of 11 pages of reviews, 8 1/2 pages are 5*, 1 1/2 pages are 4* & 3* (with most of them still saying that it works) and 1 page of 2* & 3* reviews.

If I needed something to unblock a sink, I don't think I'd have any hesitation in spending £3 on one of these.

I used one of these , although on an outside drain rather than a sink when our pipe cleaners wouldn't go round a very tight bend.  The thrill when the clog gave way

Aye those are great; normally I'll clean the trap or use a plunger, then resort to a snake.

There's an obvious blockage further down we can't get to and i couldn't loosen the part circled in red, but doubt that's where the blockage is :(

My sink blocked fully a few months ago with a grey/brown waxy gunk just past where your red circled connector is. I suspect it was from laundry liquid which I'd changed to about a year previously.
As pictured you need to turn the red circled connector clockwise to undo it, Holding it with a cloth or wearing gloves might help. Removing the u bend might make access easier.

What did your landlord say when you wrote and reported the problem?

Unless I've missed something have you tried any of the sink unblocking gels / powders that are out there. Something like Mr Muscle Sink Unblocker? Cost will be about £5 if it takes one bottle.
