I am with you monsterboy. I wouldn't want to pay good money for a 2 year old car only to find it had been smashed up and badly repaired. You do wonder what the point of this forum is. Post your problem then get abuse from the regulars.
"smashed up and badly repaired" - yet the O/P didnt notice when he looked over the car, test drove the car and did his own due diligence?

Can you show where us "regulars" verbally abused the O/P?  A repaired wing (to a standard that the O/P didnt notice it when he checked the car over and test drove it) is not reason to reject the car.   Thats not abuse, its a statement of fact.

The dealership went above and beyond though so well done them.

It's Fred. We know that logic, reason and facts go out the window whenever anybody mentions the motor trade to him.

It was an approved used VW. A skilled Volkswagen trained technician had spent hours doing a 142 point inspection. What is the point of a customer looking at it themselves after that level of quality control? They are never going to meet the obsessive standards of a factory trained technician at a main dealer.

I thought your usual stance was the motor trade is an unskilled industry.

They don't come more highly trained than a factory trained technician at a main dealer. Everyone knows that.

You seriously think that the best technician would do the 142 point inspection, rather than the £6.45 an hour kid leaning on the broom, who usually sweeps the forecourt?  :D:D:D

I take it your remark was sarcasm?

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

The 142-pt checklist isn't easy to find online, but there is an image of what's allegedly one part of it - and it has the questions that cover this situation.

"Visual check" - "Major body damage/accidents visible? Major paint damage visible?"

And that would seem to be it. No more than any sensible used buyer would do themselves on a quick walk-around, right? So, yes, cars that have previously had bodywork repairs can be retailed. Remember, something approaching a third of all brand new cars have had bodywork repairs prior to delivery...

The repairs in this instance were good enough that the OP didn't notice prior to collection, and only noticed immediately after arriving home when he "washed and spruced up" a car that - presumably - was clean on collection.

So is this more than the usual wash? Is it some kind of "detailing"? We don't know what the damage was. Did he use a paint depth gauge as part of this "detailing"?

This is the kind of utterly monomaniacal obsession that some "detailers" do...

Would expecting a 2.5yo used car to meet up to those levels of inspection be reasonable under the CRA? Could such repairs have been done before delivery of the car new, and the previous keeper never once noticed in 2.5yrs...?

The OP purchased an approved used VW which is designed to give you the same exceptional level of experience as a new car customer, giving you complete confidence and peace of mind. It had a 30 day 'no quibble' exchange policy. The OP was worried because it was the start of lockdown and he was worried about losing his 30 days. All he got was the used car salesman "Nah you can't get your money back. Go away. Most brand new cars are crashed and repaired". The body work was noticed within an hour of getting the car home and should have been picked up on a comprehensive 142 point check.
