Don’t bother raising a complaint, this will not help in this case. Suppliers are allowed to charge whatever they want for their energy, you will just be deadlocked. Since the price cap came into place most company’s have increased their none standard meter prices, as most were underchanging previously. Some have gone from 6p for the heat unit to 15p which is more than double. The ombudsman won’t get involved as it’s outside the terms of reference. Only option is to change supplier if you are unhappy with the price. However, you then run the risk of not getting the same meter if it breaks.
Unfortunately those of us on SSE THTC tariffs are not able to change supplier easily. We have 2 meters, so often 2 standing charges, so we need to first change meter and wiring to change supplier. Need to do your own calculations on your standard/THTC energy split (mine is 20/80) to see if it is worth changing, especially in some areas of Scotland where cheaper energy deals are not available.
  • THTC is complicated, what type of heating do you have ? Do you have 2 meters and does THTC meter give you cheaper energy 24 hours a day.
I have underfloor throughout and get cheaper rate on my THTC meter 24/7. My tariff ends 19th July and I spoke to SSE a few weeks ago and was told about their SSE 1 year Fixed Renew V2 tariff which was more expensive that my current one. You could phone SSE and ask for this tariff.

I defo have THTC, their prices have taken a fair hike, The V2 tariff is the one SSE recommended. Im between a rock and a hard place :(

I feel your pain, people in other threads advise not to try and change suppliers when you have our type of meter setup. I have tried, I was supposed to move to Our Power the day after they went bust and although I tried I could not stop being transferred to Utilita, who were a nightmare. I switch back to SSE and a few weeks ago tried to switch to Octopus as I read on here that some Scottish Power Comfort Plus customers had done so, however I could not get Octopus to accept my THTC usage at the Economy 7 night rate.

You are able to switch to a single rate with 1 standing daily charge, but you will need to do your sums as to whether it will be cheaper for you. It is not worth it for me as my usage is 22% standard rate snd 78% THTC and I live in an area, Argyll and Bute, where there are no really cheap rate suppliers. I assume that Caithness will. be the same.

Someone did say at least we live in a beautiful area, and expensive energy is the price we pay !!
  • I am with EDF in Aviemore. They gave me a separate account for each meter - Standard Variable (singleheat) for the storage heaters at 11.25p and Easyonline 18 month for the other meter at 16.76p with a single standing charge of 24.5p per day. You can only get this by phoning EDF on 0333 200 5100 and asking for their complex metering department. Been with them for over a year wih no problems. Not sire if this is available all over Scotland but worth a try.

Thanks for this info on EDF madhacksman, very interesting. Can you please let me know if the rates quoted are inclusive of VAT ?
