Can you get refunds on travel insurance?

Once I cancelled my holiday, one phone call to them, and as I hadn't claimed anything, they happily refunded a (large) percentage of the insurance, based on when I took it out, how many days cover I had used, and how many days from the phone call to my holiday that I wouldn't be using.
It's important info as now people (me included) can advise "ask your insurance company" rather than a one size fits all one.

You were using the insurance since the day you bought it.

I opted to move my holiday to similar dates next year, and my insurer LV has extended my single trip policy till then. As next year's dates haven't yet been finalised, they're just provisional at the moment and can be adjusted when the actual dates are confirmed.0

I must admit I was pleasantly surprised, I was fully expecting them to say no.
