Hi Folks - Last month I spoke to Virginmedia and asked to remove any packages that I can save on, as I recently lost my job, and I am on benefits now.
I decided That I wanted to leave VM, and just use my mobile phone for dats.
so I removed, weekend calls etc etc..
I felt quite pleased that I went from £73.00 a month down to £43.00.
I confirmed with the agent, if that is all I would be charged next month, and he said, that that is all.

I just went to pay my bill online, and it’s showing as £250.00, and as I look through, it seems that they are charging me £143.00 for phone calls.
I worked out that they are charging me £0.15 / minute
I feel quite sick and feel that they will blind me with jargon or the run around.
Can anybody please help or advise?

Thankyou

15p a min is about right for mobile calls if you don't have a package.
  • Yep but my calculations it implies that I have made 1000 minutes of calls.
    no way have I

  • I just re-read, it was land line calls from my VM phone to other land line calls.

If you removed free calls and then made calls that sounds like a silly thing to do

A couple of calls, not 1000 minutes of calls...

No idea of VM charging methods but a lot are minutes only, for instance  1 min 4 seconds = 2 minutes

If you removed landline ‘inclusive’ calls , and continued to make landline calls , then being charged for them is correct, so the issue seems to be , is what they have charged you correct , presumably your bill for calls should be itemised , so if you have been charged around £140 you should be able to see how this total was arrived at, I have no idea what their prices are , but say £0.20p a minute, an hour call is £12, so it’s easy to see how these could soon rack up ( 12 of these calls in a month, or one 20-25 min call per day ), you seem to suggest their charging for landline calls is similar to mobiles ( 1000 minutes per month ) but is that the case ?
If you haven’t made anything like these numbers of calls, then the itemisation on the bill should show where the big individual call costs were, but I suspect if you are thinking it’s not the number of calls, but  the combined minutes , and that was less than 1000, you may need to check how VM actually charge for landline originated calls, if they did give 1000 minutes a month, that around 30 mins a day, but do they ?
Without being  too condescending , if the plan was to use your mobile to save costs  ( which may well have ‘unlimited’ calls ) why continue to use the landline for calls  ?

Virgin suggests call costs are about,
    17p a minute to landlines
    19p a minute to mobiles
    25p call connection fee.

Calls abroad can be much more, pounds a minute.

Don't forget that there is a connection charge of 19p for every call that is not covered by a plan.
So even a 10 second call will cost you 19p + 12p for the time.
So how many calls and how much time did you use? It might be better buy a cheap mobile and to look for a mobile sim that has at least 1000 mins included to landlines every month.
Have a look at this for example https://smarty.co.uk/plans/3gb-data which could cost £7 a month and give you unlimited calls,
