I see your logic but bear in mind that they are misleading thousands of people and £20 becomes tens of thousands of pounds. Why should they be allowed to make more profit through misrepresentation and disadvantage to other firms and customers?
I think most would assume it’s a daily rate

Point is, the tourist tax, environmental tax, call it what you will, does not go to the travel company to swell its coffers. It goes to the government or local authority of the country or area you holiday in.

In law there is no such thing as assumption.
It is a daily rate then why dont they specify it? Because they know that most people will fall for it and assume that its the total amount payable. I mean it says 'amount due at hotel: £1.70'. Why would you assume it otherwise? Any literate person would think this is the total amount payable at the hotel.

Profit? The £20 goes to the city you stay in, not the travel company 🤣

Have read the thread with interest. Do not know why it is a discussion about travel firm misrepresentation?

The travel firm does not gain from getting "tens of thousands per year"

It is a local tax set by the local authorities collected for each guest staying per night.

Even here in the UK local councils have implemented  or are considering a local tourist tax. Local council here  thinking about £2 each per night.

Any literate and intelligent person, I would assume look at other peoples reviews and questions before booking any hotel?

I think you need to reel in your attitude problem, people here are trying to help /guide you with their experience/knowledge to assume that someone who does not agree with you is not literate is something that you should not state on this forum.

Maybe not Tripadvisor, but if it's stated, it is usually per night.

I regularly stay in an Eastern European city on business whose tax is €1/night per person. That gets spent on producing tourist guides and marketing, which I have to agree is a better use of money (and minimal cost). That's about 5% of the cost of a private room, so a small sum that helps the development of the city.

Tourist taxes in many cases are fair (£20 definitely is IMO for a stay of several nights), especially to developing countries, as in a lot of cases they are a niche market and for obvious reasons locals shouldn't be left to pick up the costs. As stated, the travel company doesn't get £10000s per year, the tourism marketing agency does.
