Garden tap not working

Hi,
There is barely a dribble of water coming out of my garden tap. I have taken it apart and all is fine with however, when I took it off the outside wall, no water sprayed out from the pipe, as I’d expected, just a dribble. I have turned the inside valve/tap under the sink on full but I can only think that it must be something wrong with the internal valve/tap and don’t know where to start trying to check it. Ordinarily, I would have called a plumber in but the current situation re social distancing, etc, prevents me from doing this. It would be great if this is  a reasonably simple fix, that I can try and do myself, rather than have to wait to call a plumber in so just want to ask for any advice or guidance from this Forum.
I really appreciate any assistance!
Many thanks.

You took the outside tap off without turning the inside tap off first, but got a dribble?

You have now turned the inside tap on full and still no water?

Turn the water off at the main stopcock and take the inside valve of for examination.

Alternatively, try turning the inside valve/tap off and on numerous times.  It may be sticking and release by doing that.

Is the inside tap a self-cutting one like this?

If so, the flap of pipe it cuts out when fitted has folded back over the hole. If it's not one of those, that's not the problem!
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • If your internal valve is one of those with a small plastic handle, the handles have been known to turn on the spindle which actually works the valve.  Looks as if it is on (or off), but it isn't.  If yours is this type, (Screwfix 89226 is an example), try removing the handle and turning the spindle with pliers.
Another possibility is that the check valve (non-return valve) which should be fitted between the mains water and the internal valve for the outside tap have become stuck.  If so, you'll need to isolate the mains water supply to change it.

Has the outside tap worked previously?
Could there be an isolator valve fitted to the pipe before it gets to the outside?

I think that's what the last 4 posts are talking about?

  • HI, does anyone know how to stop this from leaking? I’ve tried to turn the but it just gets worse.  Was hoping to put a tap on it at some point,

    Thanks
  • Hi,
have you got an isolator on the inside, if so, shut it off.
  • I’ve got one Under the Kitchen sink, but it turns all the water off.

There should be two 1 for main supply and 1 for tap.

So it can be isolated if problem  especially in winter months.

I would suggest ensuring you have an isolating valve fitted before continuing.
