Three changing plan at end of contract

Just had an email from Three saying that as my husband's 12 month SIM only contract (that is in my name as I already had accounts with them and it was a rush job due to being the last day of the offer and the shop about to close!) has matured, they will be moving him onto a replacement contract unless we let them know otherwise.  Thing is, the replacement they say they will put him on is a monthly £14 for 4GB one, whereas his existing one was 12-months at £11 for 4GB.

I always thought that if you don't actively approach them for an "upgrade" your existing agreement would roll on.

Anyway they did list some alternatives so we have selected a 24-months contract at £9 for 8GB and unlimited texts/minutes.  Can't help wondering why this was necessary though, as he was quite happy with his existing agreement and 4GB was more than enough for his usage.

Bit off to chop and change things like this isn't it, and effectively make him sign up for another two years if he doesn't want a price increase?

It was possibly an offer where you got £3 discount of the standard price for 12 months - it was possible in the T&C’s of the offer at the time.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

Oh well, thanks for the suggestion but I definitely don't remember being told that in the store.  Never mind, we seem to have got a decent deal, provided it actually gets applied - will check the app in a few days to make sure.

OP why don't you jumpship and go to Smarty provider they are owned by Three and you can leave anytime its like payg.
all you do is give your credit/debit card details to them and tick a box to let them take a monthly fee out.
they do 30gb data and unlimited min/text for £10 so all they would take is £10 a month.
If you go on one of there smaller planes and don't use all the data you can sell it back to them. anyway have a look at the link.

Its a lot less then you are paying and..........NO Contract.......like i said you can leave when you like.

Thanks, that sounds like an option.  Pity I already selected the £9 Three package, although it hasn't been activated yet.

I also like Giffgaff a lot, having my second phone on their £12 10GB recurring Goodybag, although I know I could get away with a cheaper one as it's only a spare phone for long journeys with no charging facilities, and also I wanted something that wasn't on Three network after the last crash when I was without a means of contact or access to the Internet for train times etc., and away from home.

I find getting PAC codes and swapping the number to a new provider a bit of a faff, especially currently as Three don't seem to be answering phone calls.  I understand it can be done online, but as it's my OH's phone and he's had his number forever and is nervous about messing about with it I will probably just stick with the new £9 plan unless it goes seriously pete tong.

You don't have to ring them or go on-line to get your Pac code you can do it by Text i just did one of my numbers from Sky mobile to Three and it took a day to change over.......But if you was to do it DON'T do it over the weekend it takes a lot longer.
Text 'PAC' and your date of birth (DDMMYY) to 65075. Make sure you send the text from your number with your previous provider. A PAC only lasts 30 days, so after it expires, you'll have to request another one.

  • I have two Three SIM only contracts which have run beyond their original minimum term of 12 months. Both continue at the same monthly cost (sadly + rpi increases) although I could save a few pence by switching... but it is only pence per month and where we use the phones, both coverage and data rates on Three are good.

That's what I was expecting to happen, but to jump from £11 to £14 for exactly the same package seemed to be taking the mick a bit.  I've also had the 2.7% RPI increase notifications, just got to suck those up as it's not a lot and not worth the hassle.

  • I had the same thing with Three a couple of months ago. I was on a £9.00 pm sim only with 4 Gb of data. This had gone up to £9.22 with the RPI increase. I recieved a letter from Three as OP did. I rang them and after a 20 min conversation I ended up back on my original contract for £9.00!
Did think about jumping ship to smarty but I dont think they do free roaming.

Be aware the Smarty offers a much more basic service than Three themselves, and depending on your phone you can see a degraded service as Smarty as they haven't been given access to 4G Calling, WiFi Calling or the low frequency Band 20 signal that offers superior in-building and rural coverage that Three offer. They also have far more limited customer service features (in normal times as Three CS is quite restricted by the lockdown).
