A car rental firm abroad has billed me £1200 for some alleged damage four years after the event. Although at the time I disputed any responsibility as I knew it was not my fault, I had no choice but to leave my credit card as security. No money has ever been taken but a first reminder has arrived four years later! Is there a time limit on asking for payment. Thought at the time when I returned the car it was all a bit suspicious.

In England, the time limit is 6 years after the alleged incident. It seems they recognised and advised you they thought there was damage at the time, so this is not something you have never heard of before. You should respond and deny the claim and make it clear that any attempt to debit your card will be resisted. This looks as though their books are being audited to try and find some income when they have no rentals operating and no cash flow1

Contact your credit card company and speak to them disputing the attempt to take the money.
