Had to pay travel back from India. Travel insurance rejxt

I see three tests on the day of taking out insurance
1) were aircraft flying to India 2) Was the Government advising against traveling to India 3) Had the WHO classed it as a pandemic
If it was taken out on 4th March 2020
1) Yes
2) No
3) No
I see it as a ploy not to pay up, but expect them to fold once challenged with evidence.

as of the 15th March 2020 https://www.itv.com/news/2020-03-15/coronavirus-outbreak-foreign-office-advises-against-all-but-essential-travel-fco-advice/
the was no advice not to travel to India by the FCO
You are covered. if they don't pay out take it further as you will win. as they will have to argue that you knew more than the FCO and the WHO.

The trouble you are going to have is the following point under "What is not Insured?"Events or situations you know about before taking out a policy or booking a trip which could mean you can't travel
They are clearly going down the route that on the 4th of March Coronavirus was known about and well publicised, therefore they do not want to cover you or pay out.
You could contest this, as per the advice above from @Life__Goes__On. It's a difficult one, and I'm no expert on insurance matters, but it could go either way I think.1 -
Thank you. Shall I just write them them explaining this? ThanksLife__Goes__On said:as of the 15th March 2020 https://www.itv.com/news/2020-03-15/coronavirus-outbreak-foreign-office-advises-against-all-but-essential-travel-fco-advice/

bagand96, with this case I see as pretty simple.
To get out of the cover they need to prove (not the other way round) the person knew what would happen in the future
The OP didn't go against any advice from the FCO ( it's would be assumed the as no advice issued by them it would be safe)
Hardly anyone foresaw how quickly is virus spread, and it can't be judged by hindsight.
Edit
An example would be SARS, that didn't stop most travel worldwide it is only in the last month that we know this virus is more rampant than SARS

Yes ask them to explain how you are suppose to know more than the FCO pointing out there were no FCO advise against travel when you bought the policy or when you flew out.
Also point out that the WHO didn't declare it as a pandemic until 15th March.
Good luck
