Run down of successful challenge of Vodafone data charges (to help anyone else figure out how to)
The facts:
had a data limit but no data cap set
went over the data limit and incurred hideous costs before data was cut
didn't receive any text messages to warn that I was about to go over my limit (the grounds upon which my claim that the data charges should be cancelled, which they were)
phoned up Vodafone to complain and probably spent two hours on the phone getting passed along the line (four different people) and was offered a small discount, got a lot of false "opinions" from their operatives trying to tell me the charges would not be cancelled. I stuck to my guns saying there was no warning texts that I was approaching my data limit and I was going to take my case to the ombudsman for Vodafone (which seems to change from time to time but you need to get it from Vodafone's web site since they decide who their independent ombudsman is).
one of their operatives flat out lied and said that text messages were sent
when speaking to the forth bloke and after being put on hold yet again (part of their script) was offered 50% off the extortionate unjustified data charges. Said this was not acceptable and that I was taking the matter to the ombudsman (he did try to tell me that I may lose and therefore also lose the opportunity of the 50% reduction).
a couple of days later, got phone up by the "Vodafone directors office" to be told they would cancel the charge and take it off my next bill
Just worth noting that to use my phone I did agree to by an extra 15GB of data to get me to the end of the month which I should have gone on to the web site immediately (or the app) and cancelled that in future since they only allow you to set up a recurring extra rather than a one off.
Hope this will help someone out there!

Forgot to say, once you've gotten to the final operative and have declined the 50% reduction of your charges - they'll put you on hold before they offer that, of course. You need to ask for a deadlock letter, which you'll be sending to the ombudsman who currently seem to be CISAS, but you can ask them to confirm that.
Sure, you may be upset but, be firm and not rude. I'm sure this is not these peoples choice of job and it's not them who came up with the suite of tactics to get you to settle for less than you deserve.0
