Carers alowance

Bit of help needed please
I noticed that the carers allowance my wife gets for me is classed as income and deducted from my ESA
My wife was geting carers allowance untill he turned 16
I'm on PIP care and mobility as well ESA
So wife changed who she was caring for from my son to me (you can only get carers allowance for 1 person only)
Have noticed that the carers allowance my wife gets is deducted from my ESA benifit
Is this correct?
Is there any point of my wife claiming carers allowance if it is deducted from my ESA
Is there any disadvantage or advantage for my wife claiming carers allowance.
Thanks in advance for any help

  • Yes there is they deduct the full amount from ESA but then add on a carers premium to ESA so you end up getting around £34 a week more ESA than you would if there was no CA in payment.

If you are on a joint income related ESA claim surely the carers allowance would always have been deducted from your ESA even when she claimed it for your son ?

As your wife is added to your ESA then it would have always been deducted in full from your ESA regardless of who she claimed it for. Carers premium is £37.50 per week (increased from £36.85) If she stopped claiming then you would be £37.50 per week worse off.

And she would lose the Class 2 NI Credits she gets for claiming CA which count towards her future State Pension.

EDIT: I should have said Class 1 as pointed out by others below.

Think that should be class one credits and worth a lot more than just paying towards her old age pension?
Class 2 is for self employed?

Quite right - my mistake. Been posting so many answers to questions about self employed I think my brain jumped the rails!
and yes I realise they count for more than State Pension but that’s the issue of most concern to most people.

But since its NI class 1 credits from being a carer and not actually paid from employment I thought we established from the other thread it would not count towards contribution jsa ,etc.only state pension.
