Carphone Warehouse Returns Scam?

Hi,
I took out a new contract on EE with Carphone Warehouse online but ended up returning the phone the day after it arrived - didn't even take it out of the box.
I returned it via DPD drop off at a newsagents, and CW emailed to say they had received my return.
That was ten days ago, and I realised today that they hadn't refunded me the upfront cost for the handset, nor the first direct debit payment for the contract, so I got in touch.
They claim that they did indeed receive the package, but that the phone wasn't in the box. They have opened an investigation with DPD which will take 3-5 days.
In the meantime I have at least called EE, explained the situation and cancelled the direct debit, but I'm worried about getting my money back. Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone have any further advice?

Thanks so much and have a lovely weekend!

There's not much else you can do apart from sit back and wait to see what the outcome is, But i wouldn't have shut my DD down until its been sorted incase they try and take a money out because that would mean you could get a missed payment on your credit score.
