Hi Techie team, hope everyone is staying safe(and sane?)
Can I have some help please?
I have an Asus 3 year old Windows 10 laptop (64 bit) that currently has Kaspersky( from an old Barclays legacy) which expires in two days. Obviously Windows 10 has its own built in defender-is this all I really need? I had a bad episode of attempted identity theft (multiple credit cards via mail and attempted numerous bank accounts opened, all of which were stopped, thank God) so I am a little paranoid about security.
I use the laptop for internet browsing, banking, shopping, music, work CPD and infrequent film streaming but wouldn't consider myself a heavy user and certainly no gamer.
Other recent threads seems to say Defender is good(I had the impression it had a bad rep when it came out initially).
Do you recommend anything else for security and safety?
I would very much appreciate the help and information.
Cheers

Defender in W10* will do most of what you need. The rest can be accommodated by using Common Sense (™), plus Malwarbytes Antimalware scans.
* It was Defender (or Microsoft Security Essentials) in previous Windows releases which weren't the best.2 -
Defender is fine. Common sense is the main thing, don't be downloading freemovies.exe, and dont click on emails from bank@naatwest.ru asking you to sign into your online banking.1

Current Defender gives a baseline of about 98%,improved dramatically from 2017 .Kaspersky available on line for about £10 .0

Running Defender on 10 with Malwarebytes Premium. I set Defender to carry out Periodic Scanning:Settings - Update & Security - Virus & Threat Protection - (scroll down to) - Windows Defender Options (in blue script) - turn on Periodic Scanning. (scroll back up to) - Current Threats - Scan Options - here you can choose to carry out a Quick or Full Scan with Defender. I do a Full Scan once weekly.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

Thanks DoaM, that's very good of you to reply and so helpful. Is the MWB, the free version? (running on daily scans I presume) Otherwise the premium versions is more expensive than Kaspersky total security renewal.DoaM said:Defender in W10* will do most of what you need. Thanks Dan, common sense and protection work well together;) the stress and hassle after attempted id theft was awful. Thanks for the reply.dan958 said:Defender is fine. Out of interest where are you sourcing your £10 KAS?? cheapest KAS full security I've seen is a lot more or is that cost for AV?
Thanks again.

Thanks Robisere, MWB Premium is actually more expensive than the KAS renewal due tomorrow but I appreciate the input(and directions)Robisere said:Running Defender on 10 with Malwarebytes Premium. Ditch Kaspersky - its pointless if you are using W10 as the built in defender is fine to satisfy your AV needs.Malware is your biggest enemy these days - and malwarebytes is by far and away the best security product available to combat that. The difference between the free and premium versions is that with the free version, you need to manually open up the software and perform scans. The premium version provides 'real-time'' scanning.Wether or not its worth buying the premium version or not depends on how 'clic-happy' you are and how much you trust yourself to not run any exe's by 'mistake' or follow dodgy links. You cant really compare the price difference between kaspersky and malwarebytes , they are apples and oranges.Malwarebytes is the one single piece of security software that i would actually advise spending money on2
