How do Networks certify new mobile devices?

I am interested in buying a laptop/ UMPC from Korea that has a HSDPA modem built in. In theory I should be able to drop in my data sim and it should work.

But I was informed that the device may not work until its certified with the Vodafone network?

I thought that if a device is made to a standard then it should interoperate? I have used tri-band phones all over the world without problem. Is it different for laptops/UMPC?

  • I think the thing is is that it probably will work but if you get any problems with it not working, Vodafone won't give you any help!!
