There's no harm in you asking. We are hypothesising about what they have done, but I am 99% certain they'll say they can't rehire and furlough you.
  • It’s worth asking your old employer and if you left on good terms then they may say yes.

I left on good terms, but didn't want to contact them if they are not actually able to, which having read the responses on this thread I now believe this to be the case.

Yes, 99% sure they can't. (I don't think you can be on a payroll after a P45 has been issued.)

With regard to your old job, what was the date on your P45? I suspect it will be 25 February. If so, you cannot be furloughed by them, even if they rehired you.
With regard to your new job, if your first pay date was 29 February, they will have completed the FPS for you at some time between 26 and 29 February inclusive (it seems likely that the date of a new employee's first FPS will be used for the test as to whether they were on the payroll at 28 February 2020). 29 February (a Saturday) would be too late.
There are some technical issues around redundancy and continuity of employment, and I don't think you can be asked to return redundancy pay. I can't see why your old employer would rehire you if they can't furlough you.
It looks like I was right about the test they would use. Can your new employer furlough you now the date has moved to 19 March?
