Hanging basket question!

This is the first time I’ve done a hanging basket so excuse my naïveté! The basket is made of canes – it did have a plastic liner in but no longer. I lined the basket with some plastic bags in which I’d cut some holes, put the compost in, then planted my plants – but now whenever I water the basket, all soily water drips onto the patio!! What have I done wrong?

You may have overdone the holes! But just put a container under it until it stops dripping (then you can recycle it) and it will be fine.

Are these summer bedding plants (petunias, etc)?  If so, it's a bit early for them to be outside now.  Still a chance of frost until late May/early June.

    Trailing geraniums?

  • Trailing geraniums almost thrive on little water, don't drown them. You've done nothing wrong let the roots grow they will hold the whole thing together

These are only half hardy, and so may not survive a frost.
If you don't have a greenhouse, do you have a conservatory or a sunny enclosed porch?  Just place the basket on top of a bucket.

Probably just overnight - but keep an eye on the weather.

I have used nappies (clean) instead of a liner and it works great as they retain moisture.
