My brother has been told to work from home during the CV crisis
I understand that he is entitled to income tax relief to the tune of £6 per week ?
Bur when trying to claim online - it needs a home phone number - which he does not want to give
Do HMRC honestly phone everyone ?

Its relief of £6 per week, so an extra £1.20 per week in his pocket if he is a basic rate taxpayer, suppose he needs to ask himself is it worth it anyway.0

Why on earth doesn't he want to give his phone number?
Do you mean he doesn't want to give a landline as well as a mobile? I usually put the same number in both boxes if I only want one point of contact.0 -

I very much doubt HMRC will have time to phone.0

Been using HMRC for over 40 years. They have never phoned me. I did get a scam call once from someone saying they were HMRC but I knew straight away it was scam0

On an unrelated webchat with HMRC ("is there anything else I can help you with?") I discovered that as my 'employer' (I receive a monthly 'honorarium' from a charity, on which I pay tax by deduction from my pension) does not provide me with a work space, I can claim for working from home (this is not a COVID related enquiry). I do an annual self assessment, but can find no sections on previous returns in which to claim, nor advice on what to claim. Can anyone help?0

If he doesn't want to give out his phone number he could enter 0333 888 8888 in the online form and if HMRC ring they will get the recorded message "truecall38 is handling my calls. I prefer not to be contacted by phone, so please contact me via my email address. Goodbye!"50Twuncle said:My brother has been told to work from home during the CV crisisI understand that he is entitled to income tax relief to the tune of £6 per week ?Bur when trying to claim online - it needs a home phone number - which he does not want to giveDo HMRC honestly phone everyone ?1 -
Hello,
I am so confused re this! I worked from home for the Company who employ me throughout lock down. I've since been made redundant with my end day next Friday 18th September. I want to apply for the tax benefit £6 per week however I also run my own very small business and not sure if I need to tick the box to say I ha my own business during this period which then asks me to sign into HMRC and input the details on my tax return (the WFH wasn't linked to this business) or disregard this and input the details as if the business doesn't exist? Many thanks

No, you'll need to claim it up to 18/8/20 via your Self Assessment return. It's not a tax benefit of £6: it's tax relief on £6pw: you'll get relief of £1.20pw.No free lunch, and no free laptop
