Paid £12 on ebay and used the number provided by the activation wizard. It was automated and straightforward.
Why?   What was wrong with activating the 2016 installed?
Yes, the activation key I purchased was for Office 2016 which was already installed on the new machine just needed activation.

Or you could have just read the number off the Windows activation screen. Given a choice between that or a number provided by a stranger off the internet, I know which I'd go for.
You haven't used the (useful) quote facility, so I'm not sure if your comment is directed at me?
If it is, what do you mean about <<read the number off the Windows activation screen>>?

I meant the Office activation screen. Here's an example for 2016 but it's the same for 2019.

    Full explanation......
went to the official MS Office download page - entered the key that I had been given - it identified that the key related to 2013 H&B - it let me d/l and install it, but then, when I came to use it, it asked for the key again - when I entered the key it said that the key had already been used (or something like that) - then I ran the activation wizard which wouldn't let me activate it on line so I followed the prompts as in your photos but ...

So, as "phone activation is no longer supported for your product", I googled the phone number, typed loads of numbers from my 'confirmation ID' into the phone when the automatic lady asked me ... this then put me through to a human being who gave me the numbers to put into the 'confirmation ID' boxes - job done!!
    :)

As I keep getting reminders that my Office 2010 won't be supported after October, I've just started to look into upgrading it.  First of all, apologies that I'm not very IT literate.  When I click on the link that's provided with the various reminders, the following options are shown.

I don't want to pay an annual subscription and would rather pay a one off fee, but looking at that option (ie Office Home and Student 2019), it doesn't have Outlook included, or Skype.  I access my emails by logging onto Hotmail, which opens as Outlook, so does that mean that if I bought Office 2019 I wouldn't be able to access my emails?  And similar with Skype?

It may not be supported but it should still work fine.
You can always do what I did and buy a key for Office 2016 or 2019 on Ebay......

To confuse matters there is Outlook, the email package, which comes as part of Office and there is Outlook.com which is the name these days for hotmail and will be unaffected by whatever choice you make.

Skype is a free product anyway that works independently from Office and calls from Skype to Skype are free, the 1000 minutes or whatever it is are only if you would make non-Skype calls, so if you have no intention of using that, don't get sidetracked by whether its included or not.  Onedrive is also part of WIndows 10 as it is, so all you'd be doing with it on 10 is setting it up, that's more intended on bolting it onto Windows 7 and 8.1.

Home & Student doesn't feature Outlook, it never has done.  The presence of Outlook doesn't affect your ability to get emails which you are currently getting through Edge/Firefox/Chrome something in any event - webmail it's called.

Note that while you may not want to have an annual fee, remember you can usually beat the Microsoft prices from the likes of eBay and Amazon, which are often significantly cheaper than MS themselves, sometimes half price, sometimes more, but this will always guarantee you the latest version of the software.

It all comes down to what parts of Office you need and where.  Years ago the Professional version of Office included everything but the kitchen sink but was some ridiculous amount, like £400 or whatever and you'd have to pay again the same amount to go to the next one three years later (2007-2010).  These days you can get all that from £60 a year and the upgrade is included if it comes out while you've a subscription.  You can also use Personal on multiple computers if they're all signed into the same account - the £80 option is six different accounts but you probably don't need that anyway.

The other option:  Free solutions like LibreOffice, OpenOffice and friends, but they don't look anything like Office.  They do the same job but may be a learning curve.

I had Office 365 pre-installed which lasted free for one month. The spell-check is far superior to previous versions as its grammatical and syntax options are excellent. But I still use Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016 which I bought from ebay for £12.80.

I know Domestos kills 99% of germs, but I'm worried about the 1% that got away.
  • If you wouild like to get office 365 please do not buy on ebay. As a lot of sellers are selling there accounts on which is not good or secure, they claim is a lifetime license which is not the case as Microsoft does not offer a lifetime license for 365. Amazon are currently selling Microsoft office 365 family for up to 6 users for £47.99 1 year license.
