Driving Licence renewal at 70 - preserving C1 & D1 entitlement

I think the thread necromancer is mistaken. B+E does not get lost at 70. C1 and D1 do.
These seem to support that, too:

C1 is the biggest issue for a lot of 70yos, because of 3.5t+ campers and motorhomes. One that's 3700kg should be downplatable, although it might not leave much payload. I know a few people who chose their 70th as an excuse to simply change their van for one that's below the 3500kg C1 cap...1 -
Losing D1 can be a problem for charities that have minibuses. Many are reliant on volunteer drivers.
If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
I thought long and hard about loosing the rights to drive a 7-5 t truck when i renewed my licence BUT then thought stuff it as i have been retired for 4 years and never been near a truck why worry now.0

OP, if your local PO doesn't have the forms, can't you ask a friend or relative to get some from their local PO and send them to you?PatrickHoulihan said:My 70th birthday is rapidly approaching. My current licence includes Classes C1 & D1. These would be lost if I renewed online. To keep them I need to apply using Forms D2 & D4, but all forms are unavailable during Covid emergency. Are there any solutions to this conundrum ?0 -
OP posted the original question last April. Their licence renewal date is long gone. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
I am a bit late to the party but my understanding is that anyone who had been driving before April 1934 was not required to take any sort of test.Ganga said:
Your lucky, I not only had a paper one but before that a little red book ( you might have to google that one ) my father told me he never passed his test but drove all his life ( he was in the army from 1939 till 1945 and was taught their way to drive ,I think you obtained a civilian one that way ) I do not if what he told me was true ,I have a lot of his army records, photos etc even his fuel ration card but he has passed away so cannot ask him.Deleted_User said:When I past my test I had code 01 on my photocard, when that card expired my new one was missing code 01. Although it's no biggy to me, it shows that mistakes still happen. I'm way too young to have had an old school paper licence.
My Grandmother never took hers.

I will be 70 soon and drive a motorhome and tow a small car.
I have read all the DVLA info and am still as confused, can anyone help please?
When I renew my licence I understand I will loose my C1 entitlement.
Will I still be able to drive my motorhome and tow the car with my new licence, possibly under B1 or other?
I can see no where on the DVLA website to ask my question and have been unable to get through on the phone.

According to
https://www.comfort-insurance.co.uk/blog/new-licensing-requirements-for-over-70s
Licence Definitions
Category B
This category allows you to drive vehicles with a maximum authorized mass (MAM) of up to 3500kg, with 8 seats for passengers and a trailer no heavier than 750kg. If you want to tow a trailer heavier than 750kg then you will need a category B+E on your licence.
With this category on your licence it is possible to tow a trailer heavier than 750kg as long as the MAM of the trailer and vehicle together is no bigger than 3500kg and the trailer must be lighter than the vehicle towing it.

You probably need category C1+E, which is for vehicles between 3.5t and 7.5t towing a trailer heavier than 0.75t (subject to a total rig weight less than 12t).royal_saver said:I will be 70 soon and drive a motorhome and tow a small car.

I got my new photocard license today and notice that I lose my AM ( moped ), keep A1 and A2 but lose A ( unrestricted ) at 70. Would I have to be retested to keep them or is it just a question of a medical form to be filled in? Bizarre that its both end of the motorcycling spectrum that go!0
