British Gas Bill

Hi all, hope you can be of some help.
I just had an email from British Gas telling me I had an outstanding bill of £18.49.  Now I pay by direct debit and since this balance was left, it has been paid off by subsequent direct debit.
I've had trouble putting in my meter reading due to the app not working and the phone lines being down, but I did manage to enter if over the phone.  My bill changed to £15.49 which I then just paid as the email informed by that if it wasn't paid within two days I'd be charged £140.
Question:  Should I a bill outstanding if I pay by direct debit which would cover it?  I am on the cheapest tariff and my direct debit is set at £51.33 each month.
