AVG scanning time

Just a quick question:-

How long does your avg take to scan?

Mine seems to take min 2 hours and its getting to the stage once it's running I can't use the computer.

I am going to purchase some new memory later today, don't know if this will help with the avg problem, but just wanted to know if 2+ hours in normal?

Thanks in advance for the reply's :D

It will depend on the number of files that it has to scan and your processor speed. You haven't got it set to scan on every boot up have you? Just set it off manually when you are not using the computer.

  • It does scan every morning, but to be totally honest there is hardly any time during the day or evening that the pc is not being used

For me -15-20 mins. You need a faster processor. You can turn off auto scan scheduler/edit schedule and untick the scan box so no schedule is used then scan and update now and then at your convenience
  • 2+ hours is probably normal, however it all depends on how many files are on the hard drive, the type of scan (full, quick, custom etc.), what other programs are running and the overall spec. of your computer.

Fitting more memory will speed it up slightly because it won't have to use the page file as much, as will closing down or killing unnecessary programs (processes). You could also reduce the scan's priority in Task Manager to make other programs you may be running more responsive, however the scan will then take longer to complete.

A weekly full scan and a quick scan every couple of days is usually sufficient.

Personally I would go into Scheduled Tasks and uncheck this box as scanning every day is pointless.

Then just start a scan when it suits you.

I'd regard that as more than sufficient. On my own machine I do a full scan once a month, but I'm careful what I download and install and always scan anything I download before installing it.

If it's any consolation (and it probably isn't) Avast's scanning times are no better or worse:)

  • To be honest I thought it was my computer, that's why I asked the question originally.

    Thanks for all the reply's
  • If you have a free version it scans every day and you can't change the schedule. Mine takes between 20/30 minutes every day but I just switch the PC on a bit earlier and come back to it later.
