Paying for holidays on credit card

Hi
Please can someone help/advise. We booked a holiday in early 2019, we did not use a credit card to pay for any part of the holiday so far.
We are just wondering if we pay some of it off now with a credit card, would we be covered by the credit card to get the whole sum back, should anything happen. Or does it only apply when using the credit card to pay the initial deposit on booking the holiday. Please can someone clarify .
Many thanks in advance

Any amount paid on the card gives you s75 protection.

Is it a ATOL protected Holiday?
Booked direct with holiday co or via 3rd party site (expedia etc) As this can make a massive impact on protection on credit card.
Both debit & credit card have chargeback rights should your holiday co go bust.

In effect it makes no difference which part of the payment is on a credit card. But you have to qualify that with some of the above points for S75 to come into play.

Also remember that paying on a credit card is not a substitute for Holiday Insurance.

  • Thanks Guys,
The holiday is a package deal through TUI, it is also ATOL protected, I have got holiday insurance but I guess I’m trying to be belt and braces, as we’re in such uncharted territory.

If it is ATOL protected then the only way you would get a credit card refund is if ATOL refused to pay.

When are you expecting to travel and where to?
  • Payment is due for a cruise I have booked departing the last week in August. The travel company that I booked through is not letting me pay with a credit card. Asking instead for a bank transfer, cheque or direct debit scheme to be set. Can I insist on paying with a credit card as this will give me more cover if this travel company has difficulties. Please note I do have annual holiday insurance.
It does state on their payment page that they accept payment by debit/credit card and have a screenshot of the page incase I can take the case to ABTA who they are covered by.
I have emailed and tried to call them but as one can imagine they might be pretty overwhelmed so no reply yet.
    Many thanks in advance.

No, you can't insist on them accepting your credit card.

Many thanks zx, looks like I will have to take a hit and lose the deposit!
Will complain to ABTA first though.

I imagine that Visa and Mastercard would take a pretty dim view of a merchant advertising card acceptance but then failing to honour this, so if the merchant isn't cooperating then you might wish to point this out to the card schemes and/or Trading Standards....

If you had booked direct with TUI then you wouldn't have this problem.

I'm also suprised that you are having to pay the balance for a cruise at the end of August so early on. We are booked on a Marella cruise on 4th September and don't have to pay the balance until 12th June.

If you are still interested in going take a look at availability via the Marella site and see how the prices compare with what you are currently due to pay.
