I think numbers are restricted at funerals because it would be very hard for attendees to keep a distance from each other.  When people are grieving and crying, it would be very hard not to get close and hug each other.

Relative lives in one of those necks of the woods. A neighbour has had a bereavement and their house has been like Crewe station ever since. Preventing mourners from attending funerals isn't going to stop them from gathering elsewhere. 
I do think banning attendees completely is a step too far.

Around 10 years ago now, just short of actually, but my dads funeral was just over £3k then.

We didn't go for anything fancy, he wouldn't have wanted it. He'd have wanted it as cheap as possible, which is what we just about did.

We did have some jewellery made which contained his finger prints, hand prints. Could've had foot print if i remember right but nobody chose that. The jewellery was costly but beyond that we didn't really pay for anything 'extra'. No fancy coffin, no upgrades of any sort. He wouldn't have wanted it. Cost between £3k-£3.5k.
