Hi, I use builb energy and have just given a meter reading and got a revised bill. Im £394.82 in debt.
I pay £100 on DDM each month. I live alone. Spend part of my week at my girlfriends (thought thats now changed due to Covid-19) I have a nest thermostat which I always make sure is off when im away. I have a small ufh system in another part of hours which is also set on a timer for mornings and evenings only. I have a one bathroom with mixer shower (no bath). When I am home I have two small children with me.

Ive submitted a reading which is 3570 on my meter. The estimated was 3119.
My bill says ive used
14787 kWh @ 3.26 p/kWh 29 days @ 19.47 p/day. How much gas did you use. For this period, your average usage was 510 kWh/day or £ 17.63/day
Is it even possible to burn that much a day?

All I can think is that I have a massive leak? or that for some reason my meters units aren't units in that they are quibic ft and the gas company has it wrong?

Something is wrong for sure, but let's try to get the baseline straight first...
What was the opening reading for the current billing period, and was that an actual or estimated reading?
Also what date was that opening reading?
What sort of gas meter do you have, is it smart or traditional? .. and if smart, which make/model?

It's worth checking that the meter info is correct.  Look at the meter and note the serial number and also if it is a m3 or ft3 meter. Is this the same info as on the bill.

Go back in time to when you joined Bulb - what was the meter reading ? what have the meter readings been since then - are they Estimated (E) or Actual (A) ?

If the £100 DD original was reasonably correct  you are a very high user  - turn than underfloor off.

Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

I've just renewed my power supply contract so have my usage to hand.

I have used 12471 kwh - over the last 12 months!

Although our house is energy efficient, with an upper B rating, it also has 5 bedrooms so isn't exactly small. Over the winter we had the central heating on constantly from 7 am to around 11.00 pm.

My thoughts are that your previous bills had all been estimated and it's only with your actual reading that they have caught up, hence the massive increase. How often do you provide actual readings?

Ok Heres my previous readings attached. My last meter reading was in Nov.
Its worth noting I had a new boiler installed in jan. This is an ideal 40kw which was supposed to be more efficient than my old boiler.

The new bill is based on the changer between the 1March estimated and my actual reading.

You seems to be two at least two things dreadfully wrong, probably several more.
    • Using electricity for underfloor heating at five or six times the cost of gas.
    • Choosing to be on a crippingly expensive gas tariff, 3.26 p/kWh plus 19.47 p/day.  (Plus VAT?)
I'm paying 2.370p/kWh plus 17.29p per day. You pay £487.70 for those 14787kWh (£512.09 if VAT is extra), but I'd pay only £355.47 inc VAT !

So you didn't provide a meter reading for five months, they estimated, got it slightly wrong and now you've given them a reading they've caught up.
On a positive note, the money you should have paid has been in your account all that time!!
Provide monthly meter readings, without fail.

So If I average the usage out over the estimated months it should even out.? even then its £200 a month.

    My Tariff is Vari-Fai

    Monthly direct debit

     2.69p/kWh

    19.47p/day (£71.07/year)

I dont think I can change my Tariff with bulb. Ill have to change supplier and then pay the balance.
