Novice Needs Help/Advice For iPhone Insurance Cover - Applecare Or Other?

Hi All,

Please bear with me as I am really not savvy about these things! I recently got an iPhone XS Max phone & only have about 12 days in which to buy Applecare for it - the cost is £199!

There are things I do not like about Applecare which are a) that it is very expensive & one is limited to making only two claims within 2 years and b) even then there is a extra charge of £79 & £25 for each incident depending on the damage. The other main issues are that there is no cover at all for loss or theft which means I would have to buy other insurance to cover for loss/theft & hence even more costs - Is Applecare really worth it then - I am struggling to see the benefits of it tbh but plenty seem to be buying it so I maybe missing something about it?

I looked at some of the recommendations by MSE but some of the reviews by members here for other insurance providers were quite shocking & seemed a real nightmare to deal with.

I also do NOT currently have a bank account & see that many use such with which to insure their phones - I may open one if needed to get a good & reliable + honest one that offers great coverage for reasonable money.

Just to let you know, I bought the iPhone off ebay & it is still under the Official Standard 1 Year Apple Warranty till Feb 2021 - will this affect my ability to get insurance for the phone as it was not bought new by myself & I do not have the receipt?

I would really welcome any help/advice on the best insurance options for me from a decent provider(s) who will not mess me around if a claim is ever to be made & I really prefer something that covers for all scenarios - malfunction, loss/theft & damage etc.

Is there anything else that I should consider or be aware of with getting phone insurance?

Many Kind Thanks!

I have a bank account with phone insurance. And it’s very good. Next day replacement to my door. £100 excess though. Can claim twice a year. But I think most insurances will limit claims.
i also get the usual other stuff like holiday insurance etc etc.
I pay £20 a month for this one but there are many cheaper.

£20 a month? So after two years you’ll have paid £480, that’s nearly another phone.

The cheapest option is to put a case and screen protector on it and take care with it. Works for me.

    Yes usually .

Will Apple care transfer to a second user ??

Personal opinion its not worth insuring for all you require .

I work for a telecoms company (albeit in the IT part) and we won't sell a phone without Applecare. If you have an issue yes it's expensive and yes you still have to pay the excess but you get A+ service and genuine parts used. So (in theory) you drop the phone, walk in to an Apple store (not currently obviously, but you can book online), ad in 10 minutes you walk out with a replacement unit or with a fully repaired phone. The negative is the price.
I've lost count of the amount of our customers who have managed to break their units and just resolve it straight away with Apple. I've also lost count of the customers who have broken their units, then used an alternative route for repair, then tried to make a claim with Apple and had their claim rejected as Apple can tell if replacement parts (normally screens) are not official.
