Pick a NiMH rechargeable battery(ies) - not NiCads - ideally with a capacity of 2300mAh or above (you should be able to find 2500 ot 2700mAh - have a look at chargers/batteries from Amazon or https://www.mymemory.com).
They should last for hundreds of pictures, if not, I'd say there is a problem with the camera, especially if it can only take 5 pictures!0 -

Is your charger working properly? 5 pictures from a charge suggest either that or the battery is faulty.0 -
I strongly recommend the super little Uniross GlobeTrotter charger. Folded up, it isn't much bigger than 4 x AA batteries. It also comes with a set of 4 x AA NiMH 2300mAh batteries.
It also senses the charge in the batteries, so it will cope with newer, higher capacity ones. Some just use a timer, based on the batteries they came with.
The above link is to Argos, but you can get it much cheaper elsewhere - Homebase, B&Q, etc. I got mine from eBay, but watch out for the battery capacity offered. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
Olympus and some others "drink" batteries 2 AAs are not enough, you will still find rechargables the same-they dont hold more power than non rechargeables-its just that u can, obviously recharge them.0

Not true, two batteries have the same capacity as four batteries and if the electronics is designed to work off a lower voltage, two batteries are fine capacity wise.
Rechargeable NiMh can have much higher capacity than Duracell AA MN1500 alkaline batteries. Spec here showing a capacity of 2000mAh.
A good quality charger is required to get the best out of NiMh batteries e.g. here and higher capacity 2700mAh batteries are available here.
My Olympus doesn't drink batteries!

How you use the camera can, obviously, have an effect on the battery life. Switch it off when not in use. If it has a viewfinder, use this instead of the screen.
I always carry a spare set of freshly charged batteries. No matter what, the ones in the camera will fail when you are out and about. Then, when you get back home (or back to the caravan/apartment/hotel, if on holiday) charge up the old ones, ready for the next trip. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -

Agreed I'd be looking at changing the camera0 -
I see that a very long time after being announced, Sanyo Eneloops are at last available in the UK. Read the ecstatic review at the bottom of the linked page! Main point is, you can put the camera away for months, get it out again and it just works.

[ Update ] There's also a discussion to the effect that the mAh capacity does not tell the true story: All digicams have a threshold voltage eg 1.05v (or maybe 0.95v), when they switch off. Many NiMH batteries claim a large capacity eg 2700 mAh but much of it is at a voltage below 1.05 or 0.95 in this example. So the camera switches off anyway, long before the battery is really discharged.
Where the Eneloop very much differs, claims this reviewer

is that Eneloops maintain that critical higher voltage through nearly the whole discharge cycle so actually last much longer. Well if any MSEers try the Eneloop, let us know what you think. They are available much cheaper than the Amazon link above if you Google around.0 -
Dont understand how 2 batts can have the same cap as 4, what Olympus have you got? ive tried Fuji 2700 mha the highest i can find, and their still no good. even if you just leave them in the camera, they discharge .my cam is model no D-540 their is still load of power left for, say a toothbrush, but not the camera.
Must have a fault on the camera.0 -
