  • Not strictly “reverse” planning I know, but what plans do folks have for the veg-war supermarket offerings?

I have to admit when it comes to veg-wars, I'm Switzerland!

We try to avoid the stores at this time of year, my on-line grocery order came yesterday, veg box arrives on Saturday, so we should be set for the next two weeks.  I did however scout out MrL a couple of weeks ago for our (my) favorite continental biscuits and sweet treats so they are already in-house.  If we feel adventurous during Twixmas, we will venture out and scout out a bargain joint or two that will do us for a good few meals.

Is anyone stocking up on the 10p veg and prepping/freezing it?

  • I got a few yesterday and some more today. I've got it in sacks in the garage so should keep us going for most of January. Lots of veg next month is a great idea after probably too many treats over the festive season. I'm hoping to make lots of hearty soups as the weather is already cooling down

I've also bought two lots of carrots and sprouts, and one of parsnips. I shall over cater for Christmas dinner, then make soup with the cold leftovers. We have house guests from the 30th and some veggie friends joining us on New Year's Day, so veg soup will get stored and used then.

Was planning on making a cottage pie for dinner tomorrow but when I checked the fridge I've haven't got any mince!  Didn't realise I'd used it all so that will need to be replaced after Christmas.  Had a look to see what we could have tomorrow and found some pork steaks so we'll have those with some mash and veg.  Don't know how we used to cope without our freezers!

We are well stocked for food and the time at home over the next two weeks will give us the opportunity to bulk cook and freeze portions for all those days my train is late! @joedenise - we too have used all our mince, so I'm hoping there may be some on sale on xmas eve!

We've been mostly on track with the food plan this week, having bumped everything by one day to accommodate a nightmare travel - we had 5 minute hotdogs in wraps with ketchup and mustard - not the least bit balanced but a make do meal that we both enjoyed!

Our solstice meal yesterday was pizza with crispy smashed potatoes instead of wedges.  Today we are making a waitflower recipe of chicken and date pilaf - smells absolutely amazing, though we did start off late preparing as OH needed a late afternoon nap, so I'm starved!  I've got a rough outline for this week, but we plan to be spontaneous for a change and if the mood strikes, we will have a meal or two out, hopefully tied in to a hike or two at various NT properties.

  • Managed to nab some of the Lil’s shallots this morning - for 8p a bag they are an absolute steal. Also grabbed two bags of the tatties as we’re starting to near the end of our home grown ones now. May yet pick up another couple of bags of those too. Other than that I have a couple of swedes from T’s, and bought a couple of red cabbages from Al’s the other day - I think that’ll be us done!

Half of one of the cabbages has already made a nice big batch of red cabbage with apricot and cranberry - portioned out to provide a tub full for Christmas Day and two more for future us. I sill be doing another batch of thst at some stage to make a couple of portions for Mum, too.

A slightly sad head of broccoli, the final leek,  the last 1p squash from Al’s after Halloween and a pack of fine beans from a £1.50 box a couple of weeks ago made a veg-packed pasta bake which did a portion for lunch today and one for freezing. We also scored another £1.50 box in Lil’s today - bananas, oranges, a pomegranate, tomatoes (salad and cherry) and peppers. Two of the oranges are a bit past their best but I’ll probably chop the soft bit off the top and squeeze the rest to juice.
