Cutting your own hair . . .

flissh said:I am starting to wonder if I should. Really needed to visit hairdresser just before all this started and foolishly put it off. My hair is a total mess now. Need my roots touched up and more than a trim. Cant even dye it myself, I'm staying in someones flat and too worried about leaving dye splodges!
I am in the same boat, I had put off going to the salon since before Christmas, and had booked in - but the appointment was cancelled
I have managed the roots by doing one of those home 'root touch up' kits. They don't leave splashes anywhere in the bathroom if you are careful as you specifically paint the dye along the parting / hairline - so it is no where near as messy as doing a full head. It might be an idea for you to try?
I won't be cutting it though. I am surprised that people are doing this already. It has only been 2.5 weeks so less than a quarter of an inch of hair growth will have happened in that time, barely noticeable
I know a lady who had lovely long hair and decided to shave her head and to be fair, she looks cute, but it don't suit everyone. Ladies shaving their heads seems to be trending on social media at the minute

I do cut my own. But then again its a all over number 1 so fairly easy to do.
I do give my dad a short back and side. 3 on the side, 5 on top.
As long as you keep the cuts straight and clean, you'll be ok.

I was already over due for a cut when the lockdown started.
My hair grows very fast, much faster than the average of 1/2 inch a month. It's a female family trait, Mum is same and my Nans hairdresser is amazed that at 92 hers still grows so fast.
At the moment I'm putting up with the length, but I'm needing more and more shampoo etc (do have loads) and longer drying times. It needs washing every other day.
I did experiment recently with washing less often and less product so I'm at the minimum my hair needs.
I am getting fed up.
Won't last more than another few weeks without cutting a bit off myself. I have rough layers anyway, it'll get tidied professionally eventually.1 -

A couple of things many people have found helpful for lasting a bit longer between washes is putting longer hair up, and generally touching it less (including brushing less) as oils from our hands and stimulation of the scalp can cause it to become greasy a bit quicker - and minimising use of styling products, if they're something you use.

I don't use styling products. I comb maybe three times a day. My hair is pretty straight apart from a curve at the bottom, I spend a lot of time in bed so I have more tangles than average.
I used to only shampoo my scalp and let the run off clean the length, then realised a hairdresser always covers the whole hair in shampoo. I tried it out and liked the result much better, cleans the whole hair throughly.
I occasionally tie it up but often when I do even with a loose scrunchie it gives me a headache. I will definitely have to tie it up more though as it gets longer.1 -
Mm, hairdressers do lots of things to hair that aren't entirely necessary or good for hair! But if you prefer the results then that's what should guide you
I also spend a lot of time in bed or at least horizontal, and satin pillowcases have really helped prevent an awful lot of tangles - they can be really cheap off eBay, and can be washed normally or just with shampoo/laundry detergent, or anywhere in between. I'm afraid I don't have experience with shorter hair to recommend possible fatigue/pain-friendly (whichever applies) ways of keeping it up though. I use hair forks and sticks almost exclusively but they do need a certain length to work (I don't know how long your hair is) and they don't always agree with very sensitive scalps. Is having it in a ponytail when laying down any less painful than when you're up?1 -
I took the plunge and coloured my hair. Im quite pleased with the results. I bought some nice clips when I was in the supermarket and now just clipping my fringe back.. Don't really care about the rest.

I cut my own hair all the time. I have mid back length hair and just take the bare minimum off about once a month. First time I did it I was so nervous about it but now it doesn’t bother me so much 🙂I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Health & Beauty, Greenfingered Moneysaving and How Much Have You Saved boards. I was lucky I had a hell of a lot chopped off the end of feb , I have it short but I went real short because money was tight and I wanted an extra week or two. My appointment was due last week and its still looking good.
I can cut my own fringe using the twist method, Im blind as a bat without my varifocals so normal snipping in is impossible for me
I allowed the grey to come through 4 years ago and have never regretted it2
